Hello Fishlore buddies ,
Today I went to buy some decor at my LFS for my 10 Gal. Aquarium, I decided to buy a couple of Anacharis and what a surprise when I got home I noticed something moving in the bag..... it was an African Frog! a complete Hitch Hiker, so now I don't know whether to return it or keep it and try to raise it, I have no food for it so any advice on what can I do? I would gladly appreciate it if anyone had great advice!

Wow!

Is it and African Dwarf Frog or and African Clawed Frog?
You can tell the different by looking at the frog front feet.
If there is webbing between the toes, it's an ADF.
If there is no webbing, it"s an ACF.

They have different requirements so before making suggestions, we need to know what kind it is and what your set up is like.

Is your aquarium info up to date?

ditto betta/horse lover - - PICTURES!!!

If it is an ACF, you will have to make a decision to either give it its own 10 gallon tank away from fish, or return it - - these frogs get large and are voracious fish eaters

Dwarfs have claws too...both species have little black claws on their hind feet.

Look at all four feet...do both the front and back have webbing between the toes/feet?

If yes, dwarf. If only in the back, clawed.

Picture??

As mentioned above. Both ADF's and ACF's have claws.
You have to check and see if there is webbing on the front feet.

Like jenste said.....
Webbing on front = African Dwarf Frog
No Webbing on front = African Clawed Frog

After determining which you have, read the care sheet Aquarist48 linked to in post #2.

I used to have one! Diddn't have any fish back then. As well as bloodwoorms, I suggest feeding your frog HBH Frog and Tadpole Bites.

Too cute! I loved my ADFs. I should get more some day lol They like a lot of things. Mine loved Brine Shrimp, Blood worms, and one of them even learned to come up for TetraMin flakes! If you have any livebearers, they should eat the fry too. Keep in mind, these guys aren't the brightest, so if you have other fish in the tank (I'm going to assume you do lol) you will need to feed it in the same spot every day, at the same time, or they won't eat, and they won't fend off any one who tries to steal their food either (unless its another frog. On of my girls loves to eat, and every bit if food was hers and she wasn't sharing XD). Good luck with the little guy! Looks like a female (or a really fat male... lol)

Is your aquarium information up to date?
Any other fish beside the 2 guppies?

Does he have a cave or something he can hide out in?
Does he ever come out from behind the filter?
How and what is he eating?

READ CAREFULLY BEFORE GIVING ADVICE!
Yes my Aquarium info is up to date, and no I just got 2 Neon Tetras, no cave but gonna get one on my next visit to my LFS, yes he comes out very frequent to eat or just for a swim, I'm feeding it blood worms by simply putting it in front of its face.

Word of advice, Lucy is one of the most knowledgeable people on the forum about ADF, and a moderator, so I would try and be a little bit more respectful - asking questions is a way to find out information about your tank, so we can help you learn how to care about the frog you had not planned for, and therefore did not research ahead of time.
now that you have an unexpected living creature to care for, by asking numerous questions related to his care and wellbeing, we are trying to help you keep him alive

Every question Lucy asked was justified

Is your aquarium information up to date? - - > you have not listed your ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate readings - so therefore it is not up to date because we have no idea about the filtration system. These frogs are very sensitive to water conditions, and knowing if the filtration system is mature or not will help us help you go about keeping him from a) burning his skin off from ammonia 2) developing a fungal or bacterial infection from poor water quality 3) developing bloat / dropsy which is in most cases fatal and again caused by poor water quality.
Any other fish beside the 2 guppies? - - > important to know about your stocking. 1) A chance in stocking levels means a change in the ammonia introduced into the water which means that the filter has to grow more bacteria in order to cope with it, which equals a minI cycle in some cases depending on how much stock you added at once. 2) some fish cannot be kept with ADF because they are nippy. (Tetras have this reputation by the way). By knowing if you have any other fish besides the guppies we can tell you what warning signs you need to watch for to be able to observe if your frog is being pestered/bullied. A stressed frog is an easily sick frog. (you did mention he was constantly hiding wedged behind the filter - a spot he might be using to escape a nippy tetra)

Does he have a cave or something he can hide out in?
- - > the more hiding spots the frog knows he has to escape to, the more confident and safe he feels exploring his environment. Every frog tank should have medium to heavy planting whether silk or real, and hiding spots that the frog can easily find.
Does he ever come out from behind the filter?- - > This is not a normal hiding spot - frogs are sensitive to vibrations, so considering the fact that he is next to something in the tank that does nothing but vibrate, something in the tank may be hurting him and he is trying to escape it by any means.
How and what is he eating? - - > diet is crucial. Obviously, fish are not frogs. Their dietary needs are completely different and therefore they cannot be expected to eat fish food. They need a specially formulated amphibian/reptile diet - - Available everywhere cheap as Reptomin Sticks (break them up, or by the bite size), HBH frog and tadpole bites (USA), ZooMed frog and tadpole bites (UK). Supplement with bloodworms (the frozen then thawed kind, not the freezedried). Also, when you have fish with the frogs, the frogs usually do not eat well - the fish find the food much faster and eat it first. Frogs hunt by scent and have terrible sight, they cannot find the food except by "sniffing it out". When kept in a tank with fish, dedicated owners who care about their frogs health, spot feed (bring the food directly to where the frog is currently sitting on the floor of the tank) and deposit the food there with the aid of a turkey baster or tweezers. Some also just use their hands.

Lucy was asking questions for a reason - because she cares about your frog and is trying to help you keep him happy and healthy.

Sorry Lucy if I sounded a bit rough but the READ CAREFULLY part wasn't meant for you I meant that toward those who haven't read the rest of the thread, but I do apologize.
