hI I may be getting a 5 inch black nasty cichlid in the coming months and I heard they were very susceptible to bloat so I was wondering how often can I change its water ?how many percent of water?I was thinking of 30% twice a week every 3 days is this ok?also I live in a part of the philippines where hikarI is the best option available so is cichlid excell sinking suitable diet for my black nasty to prevent bloat? I heard they get boalt when fed high meaty content food so I'm going to feed it herbivore pellets

I do water changes of like 40% on my cichlids tank 2x a week. It's a 112g.

I do a 50% twice a week on all my other tanks but I read somewhere that black nasty's hate change even changing decor or changing water could stress them enough to get bloat so I was looking for a regime that is safe

What’s a black nasty cichlid? Could you provide a picture and/or scientific name?

Keep this thing ALONE in a tank of at least 400 L (around 100 gallons for you Americans)!!! It deserves its common name Black Nasty, and for good reason. About bloat, it’s more of an issue among Lake MalawI cichlids, which this huge diablo isn’t. This fish will eat anything, so feed it a varied diet containing carnivore pellets (so I would instead feed this thing large Cichlid Gold or Food Sticks) and (cleaned) vegetables. Contrary to your fears, I would do water changes to this thing a lot! It’s a pretty robust fish according to other cichlid keepers; its difficulty comes from its tank size and behavior (which discourages many people from keeping a large nasty fish alone)

hmm emerald on my research this fish is best fed spirulina pellets and a herbivorous diet because despite its aggresive nature it is prone to bloat as for the tank its not a problem I have a doviI a peacock bass and a 300 gallon community of south american cichlids so keeping big cichlids is not new to me I'm just worried about the things I hear and read on this one and its quite rare here so would like to get every detail right
