2 Gallon Tank Hey, what about this for an easy tank divider ...

I am thinking of floating my 3 gal acrylic *inside* my 20 L. I could use it many ways in there without having to do the tricky tank divider thingy.

what about a floating hospital tank, or quarantine? To do the frequent water changes required by a 3 gal, you could just pour the water out, and push it down to flood existing water in from the 20.

I'm thinking of a floating 3 gal to breed rabbit snails (elephant snails). Or you could just aquascape with it, like have a 3 gal tank of floating plants or a planted 3 gal inside the 20.

What do you think?

Or you could use a breeder net/box. I would just be concerned about the glass bumping into the 20L. How would you get it to float & stay in the same position?

OK good question. I depends I guess whether you want it to move around or stay in place. It would need some kind of anchor, like rocks. Mine has a rI'm around the bottom that you could use to tie it to something. I like to wrap java or vines around strings and equipment to hide them.

Oh, and my 3 gal is acrylic but I think glass would work too because it has that plastic rI'm that would act as a bumper.

I think it's kind of fun, the idea of having a floating tank within a tank. Ooooo

what if you had a bigger tank and you floated a 10 gal with frogs or crabs or something. How cool would that be? It's like a floating island kind of.

And, do they make breeder nets that big?

You could make one yourself with a plastic container. I just think it would be safer than acrylic or glass.

It'd be a cool idea for a place to grow up fry (as long as other fish weren't able to jump into it).

So would you have a separate filter on it?

Interesting idea! But I'm confuzzed. Can you tell me what is safer about plastic than acrylic. For some reason, I acrylic was a type of plastic. I read once that acrylic tanks were stronger than glass. Don't know if that's true tho.

Well, I'm hoping that would be unlikely, but not impossible. For the tank to float the top would be an inch or more above the surface.

Intuitively, I think the fry and the other fish would "feel" less crowded though because they could see through into a tank that looks bigger? Just guessing. but I hate the cloudy breeding nets. It makes the tank feel crowded. At least it did in my 10 gal.

Okay, I got curious and had to give this a try. I am quarantining 2 guppies in the 3 gal. And I think they are ready to come out but should wait a few more days. I didn't like them cramped up in there so I floated the 3 gal.

Noticed a couple of things:

* the bottom is removable, so I would do that for it to look better, and move the thermometer.
* Re issue of it floating around. It doesn't need to float if you don't want. If you fill it completely with water, of course, it will sink to the bottom. It seemed to anchor well with a good sized rock on the *inside* - easy peasy.
* Note: it was very tricky to balance so that it would float straight. I had to move the filter and ornaments around 1/16 inch at a time - and ended up putting 3 shells and a tealight candle on the right front corner of the lid - whew!
* Re: fish jumping in and out: This 3 gal has a lid!
* Water changes: I easily got the filter in there and realized I could leave the heater out as it would acclimate to the 20 long. It would be easy to change water tho, but pouring water out into the 20 long and then dipping to get fresher water back in. You wouldn't even need to take it out of the bigger tank.
* I'm thinking it would be a better if not perfect idea for keeping a betta if the room was needed. Bettas are curious and it would give him more to look at fish to "hunt" outside the window (like a cat watching a bird feeder - lol). Although my Betta loves his 10, I think he would have the feeling of more room. He could still interact with me and see the room outside the glass, too.
* Great space saving idea for an apartment too. IMHO.

So, after testing this out, I think its a definite go if you like the idea or want to try it yourself.

I wouldn't use it as a QT tank because I don't want QT water to get into the main tank.

(Assuming I'm understanding this correctly...) be careful holding the weight of the inline (3 gal) tank on its rim. They do come off It'd be a good idea to support the tank from the bottom, unless it's resting on the bottom of the 20 gal. Of course, that's assuming I'm picturing this right. Sorry, I'm having screen issues to your picture is hard for me to see right now If I'm not then disregard.
