They seem to like it, looks fantastic.

Ooh, they look nice in the tank! May I ask why there is no substrate in discus tanks?

It’s just makes it easier to clean. But this is my first bare bottom tank. In general I hate the look. But I’m going to see if it cuts down on the work. I usually kept a 4-5” substrate. But I’ve reduced to around an inch to just a covering in the last year. Found that was easier to get the waste out. With the planter I can still grow plants.

So glad you're sharing this with us! I missed the beginning thread, glad to have found it and caught up. This, and all your tanks, are amazing!

Well yesterday was a long tank day. First I removed the wet/dry off the 125 and onto the 180. Wasn’t easy. Even though I measured to make sure it would fit. It was to long to slide and turn in and ther was no room to bring it in the side. Than the hoses play havoc trying to get them set up (no leaks though). Than when I got it set up I just couldn’t get the flow right with the 2 wet/drys. When the water got too high in one it was too low in the other. That took till 1am to finally get right. I really think it was messing with me! Cause I finally said that’s the last time and it held since than.

Next I removed most of the gravel from the 90g. The gravel I was using was just to big. So as I refilled the 90 I drained the 125 I’m plan to get rid of. I took the gravel out of the 125 cleaned it and added it to the 90 as it was refilling. 90 came out nice. Just have to remove the last of the gravel and push the new gravel over to that side.
01256C5C-3232-4734-82F9-6FBF6FB1D359.jpegall went good with this and the discus were fine and eating when I was done. This tank still has to move. That will be another weekend.

Next with the gravel removed and most of the wood and plants I started moving the discus into the 180. Put the first 3 in and waited about 20 minutes to make sure all was well (really messing with that **** wet/dry!).
17A6DCDE-1892-4BC1-AA39-6956FC27A8D3.jpegthan all the rest went in.
5FCCD839-82E3-4AE4-B880-AC54E670FBFD.jpegthey hid in the corner for about a 1/2 hour than started checking out the tank. All went good with moving but the last discus. The male red tiger just didn’t want to move. Took me about 5 min to catch him. So he was pretty stressed when he went in. This morning he’s got some stress pimples on him. He’s had it before so it should go away in a few days. I added salt when I put them in to help with stress.

Now today I’ve got to get the dither fish into the 180. These guys being small are going to be hard to catch in a 125!
904CC88D-C9EC-4E96-B9CC-5AB3BF3333CF.jpegthan I plan to move the discus from the other 125 in this tank. These discus have been having problems since it had a cross contamination about a year ago. So I plan to clean this whole tank replace the gravel with something white and for the fish start medicating them to see if I can get them back to good health.
E48506F8-2FC0-409D-91F9-B13F8C0CCC34.jpegyou’ll notice a lot are dark in color. All are eating but they are stressed for some reason. So I will be busy today again. This tank I plan to move to where the other 125 is and than move the 90 here. Leaving a big enough space on the side so if I need I can get things in and out on the side of the 180.

Added 3 more to the 180 and moved the 90 into place. It’s starting to come together :).
254607C4-63E7-4224-BA21-17D7024DD78B.jpegthis is an early morning lighting set up. I have the light on the left coming on brighter a little earlier than on the right.

So I polished the 125 and it came out nice.
7D36FAFD-6E43-4DC3-A938-EF3A9BC3843D.jpegjust don’t like the black background. So I ordered a rock like background for the inside of the tank.
0FF7A2A2-5E10-4747-9E36-031CA8EB3660.jpeglooks like a great idea but the footprints on it just takes away from the originality I’m looking for. Company said they’d send me another .

Lol no swimming yet. But I’ll have to keep an eye on him as he gets older!

So they’ve mailed me a new background. Said d what I want with the other one. So I figured I practice cutting it. Came out good. Nice in the tank its

I cant wait to see what it looks like with water in it.

Ok so I fulled the tank. Just to let the background soak and to see if that rock would hold down the wood. Put the backing on the back and one side. Not sure what I’m doing yet. But have a filter and heater on in the tank.

Interesting background. What will go into this tank to offset the light background?

I’m not usually a fan of these type of backgrounds but I think it’s going to work well and look good, it’s certainly not garish like some I’ve seen. This sounds like a back handed compliment but I honestly don’t mean it like that ! It’s fitted well and has no boot prints so that’s got to be a plus :)

It’ll definitely show off the colours on those gorgeous discus, and to be honest I haven’t seen the back of any of your tanks as I always focus on the fish !

Similar to the new tank. I’ll put 2 of the gray planters in it and some driftwood. Everything from this tank is going in the new set up.

Yes I’m with you 100%. I’ve never been a fan of these backgrounds. Most are very thick. This one is about an 1/8” thick. They claim a 1/4” but it thinner. So not taking up much room in the tank :). The tank above has everything in it that’s going into this tank. You can see just how dark the tank is and the discus are also dark. Here’s what that tank looked like before I moved all the discus into the 180. Look at the discus in the left high corner “with the stripes”.
9CCE0142-4108-4E0F-AF1D-2919A032AAEB.jpegthat same discus is the blue spotted one up on the right.
268BCB8F-97E0-4016-A6BD-1B51A2667427.jpegSee how the background changes the appearance. I’ve seen so many other discus tanks and it just seems lighter colors light these fish up. And here’s my backgrounds. All of these are unchangable. The color is in the acrylic. The 180 has a taped on background.

I do see the difference. It’s something I’ve noticed a lot with fish but it does seem to be a massive factor in discus colours. When I said I haven’t noticed a background it’s usually because your fish are front and centre stage not the tank !

I could watch them all day, so beautiful!!! And I love the rummies, too!!!

So I’m still not finished moving tanks. I cleaned up the 125 but the next move is to break down the other 125 and put the first in its place. Than put the second wet/dry on the 180 on the cleaned 125 and turn both of the pumps up to full or close to full speed. But of course I had to try something first. With that new background and the piece of wood I found I wanted to see what it would look like and let the wood season. So this is what I’ve got going on now.
BFB1D5CE-191E-4685-8557-27295D6B9608.jpegtempting and my wife hasn’t given me any grief about this setup. Especially since I broke down that 5g. Hey I did get rid of a tank :). Oh and I’ve even added 4 bosemani into the tank. Helping season:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:.

What a deal, you get kudos for taking down a 5gl...

When you say the second wet dry, you run both tanks on the same filters?

What I’m doing now is I have a wet/dry from a 125 that I put on the 180. This first wet/dry was fully cycled. So the 180 was ready to use 2 days later. Same fish wen from 125 to 180 +6.Now the 180 has its own wet/dry but it’s media was all new. So I’ve got both running at about 600gph= 1200ph. When im ready I’ll remove the first cycled filter and put it back on the 125 and leave the second filter on the 180 and turn up the flow to full which should be around 1200ph. The overflow on this filter has 2 utube feeding the filter but now only one is moving water now.

So yes both tanks can run on either filter. The 125 is now running on the fx6 that ran the 125 I cleaned. So all filters can be moved from tank to tank. Not worried about cross contamination because I now share everything :). New fish go into qt by themselves!!
