HELP with my DIY Sump filter.

Can anyone help me out here, I am confused about how big a sump I need for my Aquarium.
Currently am in the process of building two 23 gal tanks for which I want to make a sump filter, so can anyone suggest what proportion (in regards to the size) should the sump be?

 

are you talking one sump for the both of them or each has its own?

 

Not sure that there is a specific size ratio to aquarium size. I don’t have much room in my cabinet so I can’t have a sump. I did get a cpr hob refugium.

 

I want to run both the tanks on a single sump. and what all materials will I require?
I have listed a few like, ceramic rings, bio balls, course sponges, and the white filter wool for the water polishing.
Please Do point out if I have missed something or have done something extra.

 

here's my list for my sump that I'm planning to build (financial constraints are currently in ym way) for my 36gal.

-10gal tank
-vinal tubing (lengthe required will vary depending on position and setup.)
-your choice of substrate (most recommend a bed of around 3 in.)
-return pump (I will be getting one that is variable so that I can match GPH with my syphon)
-3-5 sheets of plexI glass or glass. ( the size will depend on the dimentions of your sump.)
-silicone( for sealing the dividers)
-power filter HOB type (this is just my personal preference. I decided to go with this in place of sponges or screen I may change my mind later.)
-heater. (choose one that can heat more than the the amount of water in the main tanks as you may lose some heat to dissapation while its returning to tank. best bet is an adjustable heater.)

now the rest depends on if you're going salt water or not. as I am not too experianced in salt water myself the only thing I know of that is left is the skimmer. there may be more to add but maybe some one else can comment on that.
