Help With Betta's Fins

HI everyone,

I've had Barry (my betta) for 4 months now. Installed him in a fully cycled 5 gallon with HOB filter, temp is at 82 degrees and the water parameters are perfect. However, when I got Barry at the fish store, his fins looked pretty shredded. I treated what I thought was fin rot (because of the look of the fins, I never noticed any blackness or fuzziness at the end of his fins) with API Pimafix (a very gentle solution) the first weeks. I stopped the treatment since his condition never got worse.

Can you guys take a look at a pictures and tell me if his fins are normal? If I'm dealing with fin rot? Ich? Just the way he was bred? Am I freaking out for nothing? PLEASE NOTE that the white spots on the pictures are a result of the reflection of the tank. He has no discoloration on his fins/body.

Thanks!

If they are in the same tank it could be nipping or if there are and sharp plants in the tank that could be the cause.

Well there is only one fish in the tank. These are two pictures of the same fish. There are no sharp plants or sharp objects in the tank.

When a fish is regrowing their fins you usually see transparent/white ares that are new growth. Normally to treat fin rot very frequent water changes do the trick. You could also use an aid such as seachem stressguard that promotes wound healing. I have found it to be very successful. I also know that when betta's are stressed they can nip their own fins. I am not entirely a betta expert and I don't really know how to differentiate fin rot and tail biting but it's something to consider.

It looks like while he was at the store, he was biting his fins (missing chunks and rays) and had fin rot (uneven analfin). Besides that, I see nothing physically wrong with him and he's a pretty guy. Keep up with clean water and you can add in some optional Stressguard to promote healing.

Sometimes some Betta fish struggle to heal their fins and some heal rather quickly . I would suggest keep an eye out on him and give him medicine and give him a methylene blue bath , I've used this method with all 7 of my Betta fish and it helps .also be cautious of any plants that could cause damage to his fins
