Help With Aqueon Filter

Everyone here has been so helpful with my fish questions, but I have another one for the group.

I have bought a used filter. It's either a 50 or a 55/75 aqueon hang on filter. When it arrived to me I watched all the videos I could to try to get it to work. It also came with a pre-filter sponge to block debris if that means anything to operation (bonus!). This is the filter the man used for the 20gal tank I bought from him, and he reported no issues when I picked it up.

So far I've taken the entire thing apart. Lo and behold, the little piece that goes on the impeller was on the wrong end. I though, "yay, I fixed it." And, to my credit, it did start making noise. I poured water in the filter as I was told to do, but it still wouldn't push water through it. I let it sit for a few seconds before unplugging it.

What should I do to try to fix it?

TL;DR My impeller seems to be working and is making the correct sound but no water is passing through the filter.

Is flow rate adjustable? Assuming you checked for blockages

Exactly how long is "a few seconds"? Maybe just not long enough to get a complete flow going?

I’m worried it will burn out. I can let it run more.

I did check to see if there was a blockage and there wasn’t. There isn’t an adjustable flow either. Or at least not that I’m aware of.

I have the filter and it’s most likely the submerged pump. 1) Make sure that the pump/intake is properly clipped to the HOB. 2) Pull out the impeller and make sure it isn’t upside down

Maybe - plug the intake/pump into a socket and see if the impeller is working

Hope this helps
