Help Urgent - Oranda Cap Issues

I have purchased a couple new oranda 3 weeks ago and last night they were fine and looked like they have since I got them but over night something has happened

Teppa's (fully red oranda) cap/wen has easily doubled over night and has changed to a motled milky white color. He seems a little less active occasionally resting on the bottom of the tank for a short while.
He is only small about 3cm long.

Other oranda seems fine tho a little less active and occasionally resting on bottom of tank.

There are other fish in the tank two large comets (about 12cm long and 6cm long) and four smaller comets (all about 3cm long) that I got with the oranda's

Please help...

hI I'm sorry to hear about your oranda, I would first check on the possibility of fungus. Do you have a photo of Teppa? What is the size tank and the water parameters? There may be a ammonia issue here as well. When was the last water change..I hope someone comes along to help here..

welcome to the forum. I have to ask a few questions to help you out.

how long has your tank been set up? I see from your aquarium info you have 100L tank. That's about 26 gallons. You are very overstocked.

Comets grow to be a foot long, they need lots of swimming room, and are not for small aquariums (they are really pond fish) . And orandas can grow very large as well.

Oranda need a minimum of 20 gallons for one goldfish, and ten gallons per additional, at the bare minimum. So for 2 orandas, they'd need a 30 gallon tank

Do you know about the nitrogen cycle?

What are your water readings for ammonia-nitrite-and nitrate?

HI again, well its very difficult to figure out what is wrong with Teppa. I agree with Joy that the approx 26G is too small for all those goldies. A larger tank or re-homing might be considered as they will get to big for that tank to live healthy. But as far as now goes, if you can get a picture that would help. If not, look up gold fish diseases and see if anything matches up. My guess is fungus, and to treat it with medications its best to find out what kind of infection it is. A water change is great I hope that you find something in your research to identify what is happening..

Orandas sometimes get white tufts on their wen, and/or a milky colored wen, especially during growth spurts of the wen. This could be completely normal, so please do not medicate !

Post your water readings first, and then a photo please if you can, and we'll take it from there.

hI sorry joy I know I'm not giving much information as I have no idea as you can see in previous post my mother deals with the readings etc this tank setup has probably been going for about 5 years now but the new fish were only introduced 3 weeks ago.

thanks for the info about the milk color during growth spurts I think this might be the issue cause the wen really grew over night

that's okay, have Mom check the readings, just to be safe.

A lot of people get worried when they see white tufts or a whitish color on their orandas wen. They assume it's fungus, but it's not. It's really very common, my own orandas have had white "tufts" on their wens. It's very natural for young orandas, as the wen grows.

If it'll make you feel better, google some information about orandas, and you will probably see similar pictures. Plus, you'll get a lot of good info about them, and get to see how big they get !

However, if the milky color is not limited to just the wen, or if other fish are affected, it may be something different. Also, if the fish aren't acting right, or remain on the bottom, that could be something totally different.

Let us know how you make out.

Talk to mom about the comets though. Six comets would need a huge tank, we're talking 200 gallons or more, seriously. They are better suited for a pond. So if you can possibly return them to the fish store, that'd probably be best.

You'll also need to upgrade to a bigger tank just for the two oraandas, in the future. They'll be okay just the two of them, in your 26 gallon for now.

hI ..good luck with Teppa, my concern was with the doubled size wen overnight and then a 'milky color'..I wanted to see if it was also fluffy cotton-like, and that's why I requested photos. Thanks for trying with the phone pics. In no way was I suggesting medications without a proper diagnose. And it was with the intent that you look up some pictures on Orandas and see for yourself. Get a bit more familiar with them. Keep the ammonia out and do water changes, keep the water temp correct, feed them proper veggies, and keep an eye out for anymore changes. * have your mom check him out, and get her opinion, extra eyes always helps..good luck

good advice mare2009 .

Sush-teppa, there's a goldfish sub-forum here on Fishlore, under Cyprinids. You may want to check it out, it has some good food ideas for your goldies, as well as other advice in general.

thanks guys for all the information I will talk to my mother about it we have had comets for 20+ years (I'm 24) always 6 or more in the same tank never having had issues. we only had to get new fish after a heat wave wiped out the majority of our tank population. I have never had orandas hence the freaking out. Once again I thank you all for the help. I will be back if I ever need more answers.
