So I just bought two male guppies from Petsmart but one looks more like a female so I was wondering if you guys could tell me what you think. So I was wondering if you guys could tell me what you think.

A clearer picture of the analfin would confirm, but she looks like a female.

Yep you've got a female, you'll need another female if you plan on keeping her and the male.

Ok thanks, I'm not questioning you but why do I need another female? Also what do I do with the babies?! Oh my goodness, just so much to take in I'm gonna be a grandmother.

Hehe, well if you want to keep the female with the male, and you've got no other females, then he'll harass her. She'll get very stressed and can get sick from all the stress. For the babies you can put plants(floating, fake or live)in for them to hide and do survivals of the fittest, or or you can get a grow out tank or breeders. But if you don't want to be overrun I'd return her, because they'll overstock your tank very quickly and you'll need some place to give the fry away. If you don't have a place to give the fry away then you'll have to look into shipping, and it can get very difficult to get rid of them. I don't know your experience, but if your a beginner I'd suggest just males or allow survival of the fittest. Hope this helps.

Livebearer males are very persistent & can harass a single female constantly & stress her out, if you want to keep a mixed sex group you need to have 2-3 females for every male.
If you don't want lots of fry I'd see if the Lfs will swap her for a male, less stress for the females & for you

The typical male to female ratio for any livebearers is 1 male to at least 2 females. That way, the male's attention is split between the females and they are able to rest.

Does your LFS accept guppy fry? If not, IMO return her and get another male like you originally wanted. A female can drop over 50 fry in one pregnancy, which takes approximately a month. Depending on your tank size & amount of hiding spots, guppies will soon overrun your tank.

EDIT: haha, everybody else already beat me to the punch of course

Ok so I will get another female. What I want to do is let the female have her fry and do survival of the fittest:-/ but if I do this will most of them get eaten? Like y'all said I don't want to be over run! I don't mind having a couple more guppies though.

Some will still survive and you'll be overrun eventually. Why put the female through the stress of pregnancy and birth if you're going to let them be eaten? The easier and fairer thing to do would be to exchange her for a male guppy.

Yes, but... Trading wouldn't stop her from giving birth, and she may or may not end up in a bad situation with someone that doesn't care. I think it's fine to keep her or to give her back, but that's just my opinion. Well let me ask this, what size tank is it? If you have a LFS that will take them when they are big enough, I'd think it would be fine. That's what I do with my platies.

Doesn't mean Bamafish353 needs to be responsible for her though. I personally would return her and get a male. Being overrun with fry is stressful and not fun.

I agree with Texas, it can ruin the experience. I shut down a beautiful tank because I was overrun with fry and found fish keeping no fun anymore because even though I COULD give the fry to the pet store, they would be using them as feeders and I could never do that. it can definitely take the enjoyment out of fish keeping when all you have at the end is a bunch of brown guppies because you had to give away all your fish that would be seen as pets not feeders, to someone who can care for them, just so you can house a million little fish that you only have so they aren't being eaten. so you need to think about what will happen to your fry after you get rid of them. if she's worried about giving 1 female guppy back to the pet store because someone may not care for it properly, they really won't like giving them 50 fish every month to be used as feeders. the pros and cons need to be weighed out but I think the best bet would be exchange her for the male guppy you originally thought you were buying.

I currently have them in a 10 gallon. Could I put the girl in a filtered 2 gallon for her to live? I don't think my lps would take her back.

Guppies are very active fish and like to explore; the minimum I would say is 5 gallons. 2 gallons would be really cutting it...

And I'm pretty sure all lfs accept returns within a certain time frame.

If you can't return her, I'd try to rehome her.

Though I'd also argue with your LFS that they should take her back as it was their fault - you asked for males and they gave you a female.

I would not be so quick to call it female. The front of the analfin shows considerable thickening, which females do not have. Developing males, however, do show that while transitioning.

I'd give it a week and check again, the fish could have a gonopodium by then.

Can you post a photo? What other fish do you have? I'd move her to a qt tank ASAP. If you can't get a qt tank, use a breeder or a tubble ware container and float on the water. What do you mean by blood marks?

Does it seem like a surface wound or internal wound?

If internal, it may be hemorrhagic septicemia. Look up some pictures and see if they look anything like what you're seeing.

Looks like a male you can tell because male live bearing fish have a line for a fin (gonopodium) while females have a traingle there

Care to give me a run down on this pea trick I hear talk of? Would save me trying to track it down. The gist of what I have seen is give them a single sweet pea?

Boil a garden pea, skin it & dice it into bite sizes.
