Help! Sea Urchin Loosing Pins!

I have a pin cushion sea urchin and it seems to be pretty heathy, but its dropping a lot of pins? I don't really see anywhere on him where it has missing needles but it almost leaves a trail behind it, is this normal?

Update:
I forgot to add that he's not missing pins but he does have a lot of tiny ones where the bigger ones have fallen off, as if he shed them. Other than moving a little slower his behavior hasn't changed.

Sorry you lost your urchin! Unfortunately inverts are the first to show signs of water issues and the least likely to recover IME.
