Help Please! Detritus Or Planaria

I’ve been out of town for a number of days and had someone feeding for r me. Got home today and did a partial water change. Notice my Betta Tank had a white, almost hair like worm swim quickly across the tank. Is this planaria? I have never had them. Couldn’t get a pic. How do I get rid of them and do they harm the fish?

Are you sure it was actually living? It could just be debris moving by current.

I think you’re really right. I looked again and I think it was a piece off guppy grass caught up in current. Thanks so much. Chalk that one up to stupidity!

I don't know what gut means, but I hope it's a good thing! LOL. No problem, we are all here to help.

Could be detritus worms... They are very thin like a hair but only about 1/4 inch. Planaria look like flat worms.

I understand they stick to the glas too. Nothing on my glass. I think I over reacted too quickly.

Planaria does stick to the glass. Detritus worms are in the water or substrate.

Detritus worms are yummy according to corys, danios and guppies. You haven’t been back long enough for panic! Remember the country!

It made me want to run right back when I looked at my tank!

Woke up to these all over my tropical tank glass. It is cleaning day and this is the tank with black sand. I still have snail eggs in there. Worms appear to be round but are crawling against glass. Do I have Planaria or Detritus worms and how do I rid them? New for me.

It's not detritus worms, they swim free. I don't know if they are planaria.

Planaria have a pointy arrow shaped head, hard to make out the details in the photo

I used a magnifying glass but didn’t see pointy heads. I watched a Utube and they will hang on glass but these seem to be crawling on it, not just hanging. Thanks for the responses. I’m sick about it!

Easiest way tI tell is to knock them of tje glass into the water if they swim around and don't sink theyre detritus worms if they contract theyre planaria.

Looks like planaria. Think I read that you can get rid of them with General Cure. You might look into it (as I might be remembering wrong ... shocking! lol).

They do swim and I noticed I am getting less of them in the glass. When I stir the sand up, they are in there.

Oh I've had these, I'm pretty sure they're not planaria, just a different type of nematode worm. They don't have the triangle head, should be harmless

I think they're nematodes too. I've got nematodes and they look like that, but mine are free swimming and like you said, in the sand. Nematoda are roundworms, planaria are flat worms and with the triangle head. Nematodes aren't much to worry about.

Yep, if there's not triangle head and two little oval eyes, it's not planaria

DarkOne
  • #25
Definitely not planaria. They're detritus worms and just a sign that you're over feeding the tank.

All makes sense. I went out of town for a few days and made up feeding packs for my hubbie. I guess I went and overboard in putting food together for him. I did notice ce food on bottom of tank and figured snails would scoop it up. Wrong choice! Thanks everybody! Today was tank cleaning day anyway so spent extra time on that tank. No dinner tonight either. lol

Corys love detritus worms.

If you don't feed your fish for 3 days, they should start eating the worms.

Agree with everyone else, detritus worms. Fish enjoy snacking on these, especially bottom dwellers like loaches and cories.
