Help on plants...

HI all,

First of all, I don't know much on plants.
Second... I find that some of my plant are getting brown spots, what's causing this? Also i've other plants similar to the one in the picture and they are hardly growing. I'm looking for plants that'll grow fast and are easy to look after, plants that look full and good.... I have those 'stringy' plants that just grow all the time, loose or planted into the gravel. And they are growing well, most of my plants consist of these.

Thank for your help...

HI there,
those brown spots can be possibly the result of diatoms, a type of algae. which will not hurt anything, just look unsightly. Ive had the same thing on my plants and decorations. I can suggest a plant that grows nicely and looks great in the tank. It is called a frill plant. I do not have the latin name available at the moment, but most LFS's carry it. Its a fast grower and a graceful plant for a tank. I have them in my tank and they are doing great. ;D

But if its algae won't it rub off? This doesn't its the leave itself that's brown.
The brown part of leaves break off after a while...
I'm going to my lfs tomro i'm going to ask if they got the frill plant, thanks

It should wipe off if it was diatoms. Maybe it is a disease on the plant itself. Maybe insufficient lighting? The frill plants proper name is: Myriophyllum scabratum. Good luck at the LFS, I'm sure they will have it. Its not rare.

That still may be too low light. some (in fact, most) aquarium plants require 2-3 watts per gallon.

The plants that I have are doing great with the lighting that they get. I will have to take the hood off to find out the wattage. But I leave my light on for at least 12 hours a day so I'm guessing its getting enough light to produce new shoots all the time. Maybe the longer light time helps if you have a low wattage hood light?

oh, hahha. Sorry. I meant "play" like "Have fun researching plants", not like "play a game". They're sites a lot like fishlore only they're mostly for aquarium plants.

All plants will help to keep the nitrates down as this is their food source....As plants age parts rot and die off....It's natural....I prune dead leaves all of the time...But if you want to raise an easy plant, try an Anubeus Nana. I planted one using a small rock for a root anchor and this thing just doesn't stop growing. In the year that I've had it, it's more than doubled its size and has flowered twice. Makes and excellent foreground plant.

I also have red crytpocorine that I've split into other plants. Very easy to care for and good for mid ground.

I've never once fertilized.

Ok, this is going to sound a bit weird, but....head to your local Wal-Mart. In the aquarium section, asuming they have one, you should be able to find two types of bulbs:

Hybrid Aponogeton
...6-8 inches in 15 days
...in 3-4 weeks, white and pink blooms will form
...needs at least 8 hours of light

-and-

Hybrid Ulvaceus (aka Dwarf Lily)
...3-5 in in 15 days

If you toss these in, they are guaranteed, by the company, to grow. How...I'm not sure. LOL I bought two packages of each a week ago, tossed them in and I am beginning to see them sprout.
