Hi, I have a plakat betta that has clamped fins. the water quality is fine. He's in a 5g tank with 1 nerite snail
Ammonia and nitrite 0
nitrate 20
I started using paracleanse but I don't think its working to treat clamped fin, even maybe making it worse. Should I stop using it to treat the clamped fins? What should I do? Also a stupid question, but will he die on me unexpectedly?
-important to note: he was in a divided 5 gallon with a betta who got dropsy (he died today)

Got a response from someone recently and they said to do frequent water changes and do not dose medication.
would I just need to keep on doing frequent water changes for him to get better? If so, how long should I be doing them for?
I rlly love my betta Loki and I would hate from him to pass...just any advice will help.
this is my tank and my sick betta :(

What a beautiful little betta! And you tank looks very nice, too!

I would continue to do some small water changes every other day for at least 2 weeks. It's always best not to throw meds at a betta unless you know what's wrong. Clean water helps many things, and it looks like you already have tannins in his tank, so that's great, too, along with live plants!

You could also add a little aquarium salt to the tank for a few days and see if that helps (if there are no other tank mates). Just follow the dosing instructions on the package. I would not use it any longer than 10 days, and aquarium salt is only removed by water changes. I use it off and on for my betta that has some breathing issues.

Just watch him closely for any signs of illness. If something is wrong, usually you will begin to see things like loss of color, loss of apetite, lethargy, trouble swimming, or maybe some body issues other than the clamped fins.

I do hope this helps! :)

My betta has been showing signs of clamped fins starting 3-4 days ago. He's active and eating well but I can't seem to pinpoint the issue. I got him April 8th of this year.
GOING TO TREAT WITH PARACLEANSE

VERY LETHARGIC, sittin at bottom AND WHITE POOP-SAME SYMPTOMS OF THE OTHER BETTA WHO DIED
*****IMPORTANT TO NOTE: he was in the same 5g 4 days ago but split between another betta. This means he had 2.5 g of space to swim (but his fins were open). He has recently gotten the 5g for himself because my the other betta died due to dropsy. His first symptom before he got dropsy was white poop and he died 2-3 days later.

Tank size: 5 gallon tank
tank age: 4 Months
pH: 7.8
ammonia: 0-.25 (more towards .25)
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 5-10
kH: N/A
gH: N/A
tank temp: 78 degrees

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): clamped fins and LETHARGIC and white poop

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 25% weekly
I started yesterday that going to be doing 25% every other day for the week to combat the symptom. (good idea or no?)

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Regular filter , hang on the tank (with no activated carbon but with sponge media) also almond leaves

Tank inhabitants: Betta and snail

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): umbrella plant roots in water started like last month

Exposure to chemicals: no chemicals

Digital photo (include if possible):

Yes I forgot to mention..along with his clamped fins, he has been dealing with white poop and being lethargic. so should I stop dosing paracleanse, because i searched it up and it seems as if his symptoms are parasitic.

Is the tank cycled? If I’m not wrong a cycled tank’s ammonia should remain at 0.

Ok, now I understand a bit more. Since you had him in the same tank as the betta that died, and you are seeing the stringy white poop, I understand the treatment for parasites. Bettas can have white stringy poop and it not be caused by a parasite, but usually that is due to a change in diet or when they aren't eating as much (they pass an empty fecal cast that is white and stringy with nothing inside).

It looks like Paracleanse is for velvet, hole in the head, lice, and skin or gill flukes. While hole in the head can affect the betta's tummy, it's not an extremely common parasite that affects bettas. It does not look like it treats nematodes, tape or flat worms, or those kind of parasites that are internal. For those types of parasites, I use levamisole flakes or Hikari PraziPro. API General Cure can aslo work for internal parasites. When using these meds, it is a good idea to have a small air stone in the tank as the meds can deplete the oxygen.

The Paracleanse is probably killing off some of your beneficial bacteria, too, so it's best to stop using that asap.

I am not sure where you are, but if you don't have access to either levamisole or PraziPro, look for a med with Praziquantel.

I would also recommend always quarantining new fish to make sure that they are disease free, especially if they are going into a tank with other fish. Using a good dewormer will prevent spread of certain types of internal parasites (for example, levamisole flakes).

While treating the fish and tank, I would stay on top of the water parameters, too.

I hope that this helps, and that it is the info that you are looking for!!!!! :)
