Please help I got this betta for my birthday this month and I've never had this problem before but his tail is constantly ripping. at first it was just a big rip on the bottom tail idk what they are called. his tail started healing after I gave him some medicine for it and then the tip of it started to clump together and now his main tail (the middle tail fin) is starting to shred horribly I've even taken everything out of his tank to see what it is and it's still shreding I don't know what to do I am still medicating him but the medicine won't even help if it's the shreding doesn't stop I have even changed out his plant when the 1st rip happend to a less spiky plant this 1 is much softer. I'm trying so hard to do right with this little baby from walmart. please help my Toby.
(here are some pics of his tail. the onlt pic I have of his tail before is a video)

Is there anything in there that his tail could be getting snagged/torn on? Bettas' fins are surprisingly fragile.

nope. nothing I removed everything sept his heater and it still ripped. its even worst since I last posted. I plan on getting a real plant to see if that will help but I'm at a loss with toby. my last betta was in the same tank with the same stuff and nothing happend to him he just passed away 4m old age.

My female betta split her tail down the middle. It was because the current was too strong. It was all healed in 3 days.

It seems you have a very small tank for him. These small aquariums can build up waste very fast and cause your betta's tail to rot. I have been having this problem a lot and it is from water quality. If you do not change his water, he will eventually become ill to the point where he will refuse to eat and will eventually die. Try doing water changes, but I recommend using bottle water with dechlorinator since he is sick and may not be able to handle water changes. Set the bottle of water in his fish tank and allow it to reach the same temp, then change the water. Do this several times and he may get better. I hope this helps you.

P.S. do not use that purple walmart plant with bettas. It was so many spikes that it will tear them if they go in it. Ive had that problem before as well

In addition to everyone's advice, get him a few inches of Anacaris to float in his tiny tank. Any other live plant will probably be too big. But Bettas love hanging in and under Anacharis. It will also help stabilize the little container's water parameters. If possible, get your little guy a bigger tank, at least 2.5 gallons. Five gallons is better. Good luck.

I have tons of hornwort in one of my tanks, but the bigger fish ignore it. It's only the fry that go in it. Plus, a few inches of anacharis would be way too much for the current tank this person has

I have gotten him a 4 gallon tank but he didn't want it when I put them in there for the for a whole week he just stayed in the corner and just huddled there he wouldn't move he just stayed there he did not like the 4 gallon tank so when I moved him back to the 2-gallon he went back to his old self he likes it in the two gallon he's happy there and he prefers it so I just keep them in the two gallon and that is used the 4 gallon for my other fish and they're happy to I do do a water change I do a 50% water change every week on his tank and every time I do clean it and everything I get I put a little bit of stress coat in there to help him out the way I see it is if they're happy they're good it's not like he's in there with multiple the fish anyways he's by himself I mean he's not crowded or anything and he doesn't have a strong water current either it's just a small little air stone Just Produce bubbles and he will even playing in the bubbles so I mean he's not stressed he's pretty happy where he is So please don't assume I don't know what I'm doing I have had fish almost all my life and I'm 26 mean I've had fish for years and know what I'm doing just he is stumping me with his tail like I said I never had this problem before I'd even had a betta in a 50 gallon tank with a bunch of goldfish and 1 cichlid and they were all happy no one touched the other the betta he even ate goldfish her because that's what he wanted I did try to give him betta food and he didnt want it

Fish are all different maybe he's a bit agoraphobic and doesn't like bigger tanks. I'd recommend getting some water tests to check your levels to make sure they're okay and rule out fin rot. Even if the test shows that there's nothing wrong, it's handy to have around.

This morning when I was laying in my bed to watch a movie I glanced over and at Toby and I saw him bite at his own tail after he literally forcefully went through the plants at the very bottom and saw him shred his own tail on the plant so now he's pretty mad at me cuz I took out his plant even put a moving electric picture frame that goes through pictures next to his tank to give him different things look at so he doesn't start eating his tail again out of boredom I'm going to get him a couple of good live plants tonight hopefully that will stop everything

The problem may also be from temperature. Do you have a heater in there? I didnt see you mention that. You may want to get a very small betta bowl heater for him, but keep the lid slightly open because these small tanks heat up very fast and usually don't let out heat

That tube seems to take up a lot of space... is it necessary?

The tube is a filtration system. (I don't find it to work though) Very common in small betta tanks
