Hello Everyone,

I need help very quickly. Today I just noticed that one of my cardinal tetras has ich. I got a school of 6 on Saturday, March 27. I don't have a quarantine tank, but that shouldn't matter because this Cardinal is in my display tank. I was wondering if anyone knew how I can burn the ich of him?

Ph: 7

not sure if this helps but if anyone else could help i think this is what ur suposed to do..

Source: How To Treat Ich
  1. Remove any carbon in the filter before beginning any treatment as it will render the medication useless.
  2. Raise the temperature of the aquarium by 2 degrees C or 4 degrees F. This speeds up the life cycle of the parasite so it can be destroyed quicker.
  3. Add aquarium salt to the water. ...
  4. Add a medication to the water

Ok, also do you think guppies will be okay at 84 - 86f water? I have them with the cardinals, but I know they like slightly cooler water.

mmmm idk that would be a little hot for them. tetras can live in like 74-78 degrees so i would put it at 76f

hi!, I would not do melafix i have never personly hade succses in treating ich with it. salt has worked the best for me but i hear good things about ich-X so you could definitly try that! my neon tetra has ich right now and for his treatment i am just doing salt it has always worked for me. and last thing I would not raise your temp anymore then it already is. tetras like it a bit cooler and 80F already is a bit high for there regular temp if you can maybe bring it to 75-78F once the ich is gone but for now I think 80F is a good temp to get rid of the ich.

Hi,

The best treatment for ich is anything with malachite green. Its the only thing, in my experience, that can eradicate ich without fail. Please be aware that if you have scaleless fish like catfish or loaches, you'll want to use a half dose as they can be quite sensitive to malachite green. Invertebrates should also be removed from the tank during treatment.

Raising the temperature doesn't kill ich, but it speeds up its life cycle, making it die off faster. This along with malachite green should clear up the parasites in just a few days.

Good luck and please feel free to ask any additional questions you may have!

Its true that 30C will stop ich as it is too high for for the parasite. However, it may be tough for the fish too and extra aeration would be necessary as hotter water contains less oxygen.

I'd recommend treating with malachite green and formalin. This is the best combination and is in Ich-X, WS3 and Rid-ich. 80F would be fine. Remove any carbon.

I believe that the advice to treat with a half dose is very wrong for Loaches as I have tested this out.

You need to start treatment as soon as you see symptoms or you may be too late. You also need to be patient and keep treating for 10 days after the spots have gone.

Salt and other treatments are not as effective. I wouldn't waste my money on Melafix or treatments that don't list their ingredients. Magic potions do not work.

UV is very helpful as it zapps the parasites when they are at the stage when they are in the water rather than on the fish or in the substrate.

Vacuuming the substrate can remove that part of the life cycle but don't overdo it and stress the fish.

Melafix wont cure ick it just help the wounds and fin damage to heal faster I was using melafix and primafix and lost an entire tank of fish. I had 2 tanks with ich at that time I found feeding them fish food soaked in fresh ground fresh garlic was the way to go along with a little medicine from imagitarium called parasite remedy I seen results with just increase temp slowly to 86 and garlic but I was still worried and saw that other fish were starting to get ick who didn't show signs of it before so then I added the imagitarium parasite remedy and after just one treatment most of the fish had cleared up completely now after day 3 not a single fish has a sign of ick but you want to keep your temperature high for another 2 weeks and continue to treat for ich for I'm told up to a week after you see the last spot disappear

Above 86F meds aren't necessary but as Redshark1 mentioned quite harsh for several fish.

As I am constantly stating : please don't use all possible treatments at the same time. Each treatment give fish a hard time (meds, heath, salt, etc....) so choose one of the advises and stick to that plan.
If that treatment doesn't work, switch to another.

Most fish are killes by the panickreaction to do everything on the same time.

Aeration is a good idea in all cases.

IME heat treatment works fine. Treated 3 times, including relative cold water fish (corys, CPD, neo shrimps..) with very few losses. If habitants are healthy, they can take 1-2weeks of 30-31C°. Same with plants.

Early treatment is the key to finish treatment as early as possible. First step, air stone and up the temperature 1 C° every three hours until 30-31C°. Increase WC to every 2-3 days, matching new water temperature with the tank to not stress more the habitants with swings. When no fish has ich spots visible, maintain temp up for 6-7 days and take down temperature 1C° every three hours.

This is the base. For me, also worked a little of seawater salt (just a coffee spoon for every 20 gallon) as increases oxigenation, blood circulation and wounds healing from ich spots. Also used Easy Life Voogle, I don't know if it is a Placebo effect but adding voogle reduced overall treatment duration 2 times from 14 days to just 8-10. It is not a med, just a complement based on Cattapa extract and similars.

Agree about using heat treatment or meds, but not both at the same time.

Yea I had no idea should drop temp if using meds it's been over a week and still no loose except a balance shark who doesn't handle heat well to start with. And a twinge cat in the very beginning he had it pretty bad fast it was odd. But I only had few visibly affected fish. So now I will wait the 6 days and drop temp I will discontinue meds since both are not needed. Thx I've only self with ich once it's why I joined this forum lol I appreciate the info I didn’t know better

I have several panda Cory's as well so had to be selective now I just inherited a tank with a few fish who's tank was REALLY bad but they looked fine now that I've set up their tank again they showing signs of white spot why is it seem like when I disturbed the substrate it activated the ich?

That's not good. I bought and doses ich x yesterday along with heat treatment. Weirdly enough all the ich spots on the cardinals dissappeared. Also I have a pair of guppies in that tank and I have never seen him come down from the top but all of a sudden he's started doing so. Is it possible for ich to go away in one day? I treated the symptoms right away as I always watch that tank every day.
