Help Me Get Rid Of My Canister Filters

Ok so as I had already posted , I was cleaning the canister filter and found that there was some gunk in the tubes , so I ended up ordering tube cleaning tool ...

But in the while I thought of cleaning the tube with hot water, also I have now 2 sunsun canister filters ...

The process of cleaning the filter was quite messy and now to be cleaning the tube was even worse ...

I took out all the tubing and poured hot water but it was not cleaned to my satisfaction, I decided to wait for the cleaning tool to arrive...

After that while trying to fit the tube back I ended up breaking my tea set that was just near by ...

Now I think taking care of these filters is proving to be too much for me ...

Can any one suggest if I can use a sponge filter instead in my 29 gallon and keep 7-8 fancy gold fish in there safely ...

I have ordered and will receive a jumbo sponge filter from "ocean free" .. will a 6 inch sponge be enough for this ...

Also can I put my filter media like seachem matrix in a mesh bag ...

I really want to get over all this hassle of canister filters ...

Thanks

Bobby

Unfortunately the reasoning behind your filthy canister is that your tank is very seriously overstocked.

I only used to clean my canister twice a year.

The extremely heavy bioload and excess detritus is going to make ANY filter a mess in that size tank.

Hi,

MikeRad89 I have returned all the carp many days back , they were in for just 2 weeks .. now I have a bare bottom with 3 fancy gold fish , a zebra danio , 2 moonlight gourami ...

All really small fish ...

So will a sponge filter be enough for this many fish ?

For a few weeks. Fish grow... The goldies will eat the danio. The pollution from goldfish will kill the gouramies. And goldfish often eat fully bacteria loaded sponge filters.
I too hate cleaning canisters, and try to avoid them. If I had goldfish, I would use them.
I chose not to keep goldfish as a solution to let me avoid canisters.

- so if I remove the gold fish and get giant danios , I can use the sponge only and get rid of the canister in atleast one of my tanks , right ?
