B88936AD-F030-4DB4-A611-47064F693497.jpeg hello! I just got back from a walk in the forest looking for wood for my tanks. I’m from Ontario too btw. The forest has sugar maple, birch, oak, and beech trees and probably more I can’t think of. I found some nice pieces of wood and I can’t really identify them to know if they’re safe for aquariums. They don’t have any bark which makes it harder to identity I read that hardwoods (oak, beech etc) are aquarium safe. And yes I am aware that they’ll leech tannins into the water and lower ph lol. If anyone could help me find out what they are and if they’re safe, thank you so much!

I believe so long as it isn't pine there should be no problems. I'd personally guess it to be a maple branch, which is perfectly safe.

Generally, so long as the forest is natural- in other words no chemicals are sprayed and there hasn't been any industrial activity that might contaminate the wood, it should be aquarium safe. I'd soak it for a couple of weeks changing the water every few days not only to lessen the tanins, but to wash off anything that might be contaminating it.

Thank you!!! I will soak it and *try* to bake it because they are too big to fit in the oven unless I cut them lol
