Hey, i have a goldfish who is seeming to be getting slowed down in growth from our 30-35g tank. I just managed to convince my family to get a 75 g tank for our 1 goldfish (no other fish) but the question of is the size truly nessecary came up. I honestly cant figure this out. 1. How big a tank does my goldfish need in order to grow the biggest possible (not a fancy) 2. May i have links to articales that back this up? Please. If i can use it to persuade my family itd be great!

i cant know for sure but i beleive either common or shubunkin. I have read commons can not be calico, whereas my fish once was... But as he is golden now i have my doubts. He is for sure not a fancy goldfish and may be a comet, but his tail seems to short. In summary, either common, shubunkin or calico...

I would do at least a 55g for a common since they are pond fish.

Well, growth isn't dependant soley on the amount of water the goldfish lives in. It's also dependant on genetics, food type and feeding schedule, how often water changes are performed and how many tankmates there are in the tank ect. Also, keep in mind most goldfish do best with a friend, though be sure to quarantine if you decide to get another.

I feed him 2 times a day, 9 am, 9 pm.
I feed him repashy super gold (i beleive, if not it is some other type of repashy. I cant be sure of the top of my head)
Water changes are performed each weekend taking out 2/3ds of the tanks water. (I am not able to make the changes more frequent due to school)
Im afraid getting any type of tankmate or even live plant is out of the question.

For fast growth, it's recommended to feed multiple times a day, a protein rich food in small amounts, with foraging material available in between. If you have a heater, that will help induce growth as well. Otherwise, your schedule sounds pretty good. Does this fish have any foraging material or sand? Your tank sounds a little under stimulating for a goldfish IMO. No friends or plants...Also why no plants or more goldfish?
Also did you read the article?

I know I said 55g, but I always like to give fish more room so they are happier.

I am afraid it is quite difficult to feed more than 2 times a day, again, because of school and i quite often have to do last minute test prep around midday.
the food i feed him is the best i could find, but i am quite open to suggestions!
i do have a heater although it is unused, because the house temperature remains at the right heating for him. again, suggestions are quite welcome!!
yes, he has sand. He has 3 hollowed out rocks (kind of like chiclid stones but big enough for him), to the right he has some fake plants that are like a kind of lawn and some taller plants to the left. I included a picture at the bottom of this page. It is an older one, he now has a couple les tall plants due to my being an idiot and taking them out and promptly dropping them in paint. (he is also bigger now)

Lol no problem!

in response to the article, i just want to make a couple things clear.
1. i am not breeding, nor showing nor any of that. I sipmply want my fish to have his best life
2. i made this post because my golfish has not been growing at his normal rate for a little time now, and it seems to me it would be linked to the tank size. (it may be linked to age, but i quite beleive he was over 1 and a half years old when we got him. It is possible i am wrong but doubtful because of the time frames...)
3. i do not NEED a huge fish. However, if him being bigger than the 4-5 inches he is means he will be healthier then i would prefer that
4. i want to give him the opportunity to grow. It doesnt matter to me if he grows to his full potential or not, what matters is that he can enjoy his life.
5. certain things are quite impossible for me: daily water changes or even semi-weekly ones. same goes for feeding. I can do it if there is no alternative, but would much rather take the alternative.
6. I have no problem getting a "too large tank" and quite honestly if he would prefer the extra gallons then hes got it. However i cannot say the same if the tank is inhibiting him
7. he is definitely stunted. When i first met him he was under an inch long. this was probably at about the age of a year old. He was kept in too small a tank with too many tankmates for about half a year, so he barely managed to pass an inch long before i got him. He since then has grown about 3-4 inches in a little over 6-7 months. He used to be growing at the pace of about an inch or so every 6 weeks, until a couple months ago when his growing came to a near standstil. He is not sick though, so i cant find a ton of solutions...

Ok, in that case then I think you're doing everything right. A goldfish doesn't have to grow to be happy IMO, if you provide a healthy environment and it seems to be healthy and thriving, then I don't see any problem with it. Many people don't try to grow their goldfish to be huge, they don't want show fish, just pets. But if you do, those are just the common methods to grow them.

Repashy Super gold is definitely the most widely accepted goldfish food in the hobby, I've never even heard someone say anything bad about it. I like your tank, it's very nice. I don't see why you want to upgrade honestly, I doubt he'll grow much more, but if you think it's better for him then there's no reason not to, you can never give them too much room!

thank you! yes, tbh i have no clue what im doing XD but i am definitely terrified of accidentally stunting him - and therefore am looking for a bigger tank. after all, better safe than sorry!

Goldfish that have passed their first birthday, especially stunted ones, rarely grow very much. You do seem to be doing a perfectly good job of caring for your fish, I wouldn't worry about him being unhappy or outgrowing the tank.

Their growth can slow due to stunting or due to not doing water changes, if you don’t so many wc, the hormones will build up in water causing the fish not to grow. This is what led to the wives tale, fish only grow to the size of their tank

Yeah, as i cannot change the water more often than i already do i wanted to compensate by having a larger tank size.

Could it be a Sarasa goldfish? They're similar to common or comet types and are orange and white. I got one less than an inch long and within a month it turned all white. 11 months later he is 6.5" long and the 37 gallon tank I got for him is seeming small. It is only 30" long and he is constantly swimming from far edge to far edge and it only takes him a few seconds. If it is a slim goldfish (not to get chubby fancy type) then I'd say get at least a 3ft long tank but longer is better.

You could sweeten the deal for you parents by pointing out that goldfish tanks indoors don't need a heater so it's not like it will cost more to heat a larger volume of water ;-)

Since you asked for articles, here's some links. This is not an endorsement of any site, just what people with their own websites or stores have to say.

180 gallon pond Sarasa Comet Goldfish: Tropical Fish for Freshwater Ponds

75 gallon Comet Goldfish 101: Care, Size, Lifespan, Tank Size...

50 gallon Comet Goldfish: Size, Lifespan, Care Guide and More…

Something to keep in mind is the shape of a tank. Some tanks have the same volume but very different "swimming space". I'd try to get the longest tank you can and try to avoid really tall or non-rectangular tanks.

Omg, i only ever heard of the three types of non-fancys i pointed out! Thats totally possible! He started out as calico - all white with splotches (thats how come his name is cali), turned all black, then all brown, and is now in the process of turning all golden.
And thank you that is a great pitch!

Omg! I've never had to think about fish tanks and earthquakes in the same sentence before. I know what my nightmare tonight will be about, haha!
