Short answer is yes, most likely. It appears to be a well-cured hardwood. As long as it hasn't been treated with chemicals it should be safe.

Do you know where it came from and if there is any possibility that hazardous material could have seeped into it? If you are absolutely sure nothing contaminated it, you can boil and use it. Do you know what type of wood it is? If in doubt, don’t use it. It looks very pretty!

What would make a piece of wood unsafe?

As the post says, hazardous material. Examples: oil, paint, fertilizers, gasoline, pesticides, etc.

UglyAsian many woods like pine or cedar also leech turpentine and resins that are toxic. The wood contains these as a means of discouraging pests from eating them and it takes years and years of curing to make them safe.

It would sure help if you knew what type of wood it was. Some trees have sap like maple and cedar. I got a piece of driftwood down by our lake about six weeks ago that I was going to use in my aquarium. I baked it in the oven for 20 minutes. When I took it out, it had black liquid oozing out of it. Well, I didn't use the piece but I'll try again because nothing dresses an aquarium like a nice piece of wood.

Good thing you baked it first!
