Hey guys, my gf has had a betta fish for about two months. Hes been doing really well since we got him and his colors and fins really got much bigger and more blue since we got him out of his cup. We went on a vacation for 5 days one week ago and came back to a sick looking fish. He's in a 10g kept at 76f. Water changes weekly with dechlorinater. I've had fish for over 10 years. This tank is fully cycled. We had the water tested and it came back normal with evidence that the N cycle is functioning. He's all by himself in the tank besides a few small snails. When we left on vacation we didnt have a timer so we figured the light stress was what was causing him to act stressed. He ate some frozen brine shrimp two days ago but won't take anything now. He sits on the bottom all day. My gf is very worried please any advise would be greatly appreciated. Pics below

Warming the water closer to 80 may help a bit, but i dont think is the cure-all in this case.

Maybe dose stresscoat and aquarium salt. He could have picked something up from stress. And I would turn lights off for a few days. Try bloodworm and other protein rich frozen foods to encourage him to eat. Hope he gets well soon.

Maybe even do two water changes per week if you are able to. Just while he is stressed, he is more susceptible to infections so the cleaner the water, the better.

It's so sweet that he lets you get that close to him!!!

Just wondering...has he always had that dark mask and dark coloring on his body?

His fins do look a little clamped, too.

Try soaking his food in some garlic juice or garlic guard to see if that tempts him to eat.

Yeah hes always been dark blue with a black head. What do the clamped fins mean?

Clamped fins is a big sign of stress.

When you see their fins clumped or compressed, that's a stress response. The aquarium salt, upping the temp a bit, and water changes will do him good. You can also add something to the tank to produce tannins if you don't already have something. Tannins tint the water brown and some people don't like that, but provide some antibacterial and antifungal properties to the tank water.

I use Indian almond leaves in my betta tanks, but you can add treated driftwood, cholla wood, decaf organic rooibos tea, or even some dark water extract. It's just another way of adding some protection and making the tank more like a betta's natural environment.
