It happened so fast I'm tempted to say it was likely something like a heart attack, aneurysm or stroke. It does happen in animals as well as in humans.

If the other fish had shown symptoms I'd be checking the electrical components for current leakage.

Also a possibility that one of the other fish attacked him in a way that damaged his insides causing him to die. But fish have heart attacks and other issues just like stated above (there are several studies done on solid black swordtails developing skin cancer).

I checked for current leakage and saw nothing. . . I was also thinking a heart attack
What should I do with the body? He was my favorite so I do not want to just dump him out. . .any suggestions?

Maybe. . .but they haven't been THAT aggressive to eachother as to kill, just simple pecks here an there nothing lethal. I'm thinking heart attack. . . hwo do fish get those, what cause them, how to avoid. . .

I buried my big guy at the base of a tree in the yard. If you don't have a yard maybe a large planter is the way to go. Then you can take him with you if you move.

As for what causes it, who knows? Genetics probably play a role. Early life. Luck of the draw. Sorry this happened but it really can happen to anyone, at any time x

I'm so sorry for your loss I have buried my favorites in potted plants....It makes a pretty little memorial.
