Hello! :) And, check out my new shrimp!!!

cutiepopboy

Hey everyone! :) I was at the pet store today and a very nice and helpful lady recommended this website. She was really thrilled to answer my questions that I had for her, and i had done a TON of research before hand, but I bought some shrimp! :) and a snail! My bowl is 0.5gal. Check it out! :) Let me know what you think! Currently the rocks i'm going to use are currently being washed and put in some water right now and I'm going to let those sit for a total of 24 hours before putting them into the bowl. But anyways.... let me know what you think!:) I would love to hear. Oh! And the plants are two anubis plants :) real:)

Welcome!

I would recommend airstone in bowl for shrimp if you don't have one already.

Wish you all the success with that bowl, we have a few here with shrimp bowls

Congrats on your shrimp bowl. How many shrimp did you get, and how do you keep track with their names?

Thank you!! :) Currently, i have five. The species is Neocaridinia sp. . I keep track of their names based off of their color. :)

Welcome to Fishlore! You probably need to cover the top because snails can escape. :)

Welcome!

Do your shrimps jump out of their bowl? I wanted to buy some yesterday at my lfs and the lady said they would escape from an uncovered aquarium which I have. So do yours stay in their bowl, andd the girl had no idea what she was talking about?

Shrimp can move backwards very fast, so if they're near the surface and get startled then it's possible for them to exit the tank, giving the impression they've jumped

Thank you for the explanation. Would they be able to do so in a 40 gallon tank? Or should I wait till I set up a 10 gallon planted, closed Betta tank. Would have only one Betta and a few shrimps.

richiep

Generally shrimp stay on the bottom but if you have floating plants like me they walk across the top of them, it makes no real difference on tank size, when the female releases pheromone to signal breeding all the males go crackers so they can jump then
All you need is 4 lid holders and a thin piece of clear perspex

Thank you for the advice, I will try that. Your picture explains it all.

Thank you! :) I put vaseline on the rim of my glass bowl. Would that be enough? If you look at my last photo, I put vaseline along the outer rim of the bowl.

richiep

I wouldnt put vaseline on the rim its possible it will collect on the foot making it very difficult for the snail to climb the glass to feed and he as no way of getting it off

Maybe a single layer of cheesecloth (that wouldn’t hinder oxygen exchange) held around the top with an elastic or decorative string would work!

cutiepopboy

Update. :) I wiped of the vaseline with a paper towl, and then recycled a plastic cover and cut out holes. What do you guys think? Kinda ugly if im being honest.... lol. I'm not sure why the image is crooked like that...... even though on my computer its normal and straight. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I really appreciate your guys' feedback!
One of my shrimp passed. :( You can kind of see them in the bottom of the bowl there

Hard for shrimp to thrive if there isnt enough biofilm.. but a shrimp bowl is definitely doable :) might want to add some Bacter AE to help accelerate the biofilm growth or at least drop a small piece of zucchini in there every couple days. Remove after 24 hours :)
