Heater Rust?

sea-potato

Can anyone tell me if this is dangerous and if I should replace my heater? It's on the outside of the heater glass, it's caked on and can't be wiped off. I'm not sure if it's rust or the metals in the water being burnt or something. Thanks!

My guess is that you have hard water and that minerals are caking on the heater. I had a similar mineral situation years ago until we moved. The tap in our new house came from a different reservoir with softer water. The baked on minerals
won't hurt your fish.

Yeah we have hard water. Could it damage the heater aside from it being ugly?

It won't damage the heater. The minerals would build up on my heater, then flake off.
