Heater Clicking Noises

I have an Aqueon submersible 300w heater in my tank, about one week old. It doesn't happen all the time, but it randomly will make a really annoying clicking sound. I've tried moving the position in the tank, raising it, lowering it and it will stop, but then sometimes hours later it will start clicking again. It didn't do it at all yesterday so I thought I had "fixed" it, but this morning it's clicking again. Has anyone had this problem or know how I can fix it? It's driving me, and probably my fish, crazy!

Thanks!

Be sure the suction cups are up towards the top, only in the area of the label. I had the same problem and realized after re-reading the directions I had one of the suction cups on the bottom where the heating element is. It stopped immediately once I moved both to the top.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that was it. I moved the suction cups up a couple of hours ago and haven't heard the clicking since. Thank you so much!!!

Is it a new one?. In the old types there is a bi-metal contact that makes a clicking sound switching on and of.

My hydro inline 300w heater makes the click noise but you can't hear it unless its in your face.

Yes, it's a new one. It would constantly click non stop for a few hours, but I think since I've moved the suction cups the problem is solved! Thanks!

I'm glad you were able to fix it. I know mine was driving me crazy until I looked at the instructions again and realized it was wring all along!

I just noticed this same "issue" last night after having the tank set up for a few months now, also using an Aqueon heater (100W version). I read the instructions, albeit very quickly, and didn't pick up on the suction cup location requirement, although it certainly makes sense now that I think about it.

I'll have to rectify the situation ASAP tonight.

Mine had been set up for over a month with the clicking started. It was beyond annoying. I looked at the instructions when installing it but didn't read them. As soon as I actually read them I moved the suction cups and it immediately stopped.

I have a heater in my 75 gallon tank that is less than 1 year old. Lately I've been hearing a loud clicking sound coming from what seems to be my heater. I try to isolate the sound but it's difficult. The only other thing it could be is my canister filter. It comes and goes but when it is happening is has a constant rhythm. It clicks every 2 seconds or so. Is it possible for a heater to do this? If so what can I do about it?

I have an Aqueon Pro heater that does have an audible click when it cycles on and off. I’ve had it about 3 years now and it’s always done this.

It’s never done this every two seconds though. Yours maybe starting to fail. Should be under warranty if less than a year.

It shouldn't be turning on and off that frequently, something must be faulty

If you get water in the dial, and the whole heater is not fully submerged. the water will boil.

I'm not sure what you mean. Is the dial supposed to be submerged as well? Is it ok to submerge it? I got a new heater today (under warranty) and I set it up with the dial out of the water although it did get wet. Will this cause a problem?

Every heater I’ve used could be completely submerged, even horizontally.

If this is happening every two seconds, get that heater the heck out of your tank. The thing could explode any day now if it is broken (which is highly likely) so I’d say don’t risk killing your fish and get a new heater.

What brand of heater is it? Does it say it can be submerged? I know that aqueon submersible will make that sound if it is not submerged but the dial gets water in it. As if, like if, you submerged it then decided not to.
As to whether that makes it or gives a hint it is going bad,,,,meh not sure about that. That has not been my experience speaking in terms of Aqueon Submersible.

With the new heater in place did the ticking stop? Dial sticking out of water is not a problem. There is usually a "minimum depth water line" on the heater. I've always had my heaters with the dial above the surface and never had a problem.

The clicking stopped with the new heater. Big Al's replaced it for free under warranty. The didn't have the same heater in stock so they gave me a 400W instead of a 300W for my 75 gallon. I hope it's not too much!
