Healthy long finned bettas?

The person I live with likes bettas with a lot fins. I've kept a plakat but am thinking of putting a vieltail in a Flex 15.

It would be by itself. I've read so many threads on this site about bettas with fin rot that I hesitate to get a long finned betta.

I'm pretty good about water changes, doing about 50% once every 7-9 days. How hard is it to keep these fish healthy? I'd like to make the room mate happy but don't want to have a chronically sick fish on my hands. I'll probly get the fish from a vendor who imports them.

I find it pretty easy in a 10+. Just a reg 50% water change weekly, really. I found if i went more than a couple weeks though, fins could get kinda ratty.

I've had multiple long finned betta for the past 3 years, and have never had any fin issues (or any issues for that matter). I keep mine in 5 gallon tanks, and do 30-50% water changes every 7-10 days. I do make sure I don't overfeed though, and somehow I manage to never have any ammonia, nitrites, or even nitrates in my betta tanks (don't ask me how).

I will add ....I believe some of the cases of bad fin rot we see around is most times (not all) caused by bad water conditions. Not changing water, following bad pet store cycle instructions etc. If you have good routines you will be fine. :)

It's a lot of good husbandry and a little bit of luck if you ask me. That said, veiltails usually have fewer problems than other more elaborate fin types.
