Have you ever gone to the LFS for one fish and bought a completely different one?

I went to the Pet Supermarket near me to get my 1st fish the other day. I was planning on getting a male betta but unfortunately all of the ones there (they only had 4 or 5) looked like they were doing VERY poorly. I wound up getting a healthy dwarf pea puffer instead (yes I have done a LOT of research on how to care for pea puffers prior to buying my little guy... just wanted to put everyone's mind at ease). Has this happened to anyone else? What did you intend to get and what did you wind up getting?

Yes! I planned on getting a betta and ember tetras after calling my favourite LFS and finding out they didn't have the salt and pepper cories I really wanted. But when I walked in, I saw pygmy cories, so I got them and the betta! I'm so glad I did, they are my new favourite thing ever.

One time I went to Petsmart to get fish food and gravel, I came out with 6 zebra danios, 10 black neon tetras, and 7 assasin snails.

OMG pygmy cories are SO cute. If I ever find them near me I'm getting some. The Pet Supermarket by me doesn't have any cories at all :-(

I could totally see myself doing something like this lol

I went in last weekend to buy java fern and some other plants and came home with an albino weather (dojo) loach....to be fair I’ve got a cold water loach tank anyway but definitely wasn’t planned.

As long as you have the space, aren’t overstocking and know what the fish needs in terms of environment, care etc what’s the harm? The issue comes when people go “that’s pretty /cool, me want it” without knowing anything about what they are buying or caring....thankfully not people on here as you have to give a **** to spend time looking at fishy forums

I want a Dojo loach so badly in the future. They seem so personable. And yes that is my stance too. If it's something that I know how to take care of and can give it a good home then there's no harm, but I won't get something that I don't know anything at all about

Well you go there for a specific fish and they don't have them and you still want some fish and hey look these are cute I can just get these instead. Like that.

They are great but you do need a decent size tank as Ideally you want 3 or more and they can grow pretty large. They will get to know you and hand feed pretty easily, and definitely one of the best for interacting.

One thing is that while they can survive in tropical temp tanks it cuts their lifespan down massively...from 10ish years to less than half

Exactly. You can’t walk out empty handed with no fishies... that’s just wrong!

Yeah I was going to do a fairly large unheated tank at some point with dojo loaches and hillstream loaches. Just loach it up haha

I know I’ll have to restrain myself too. There’s a honey gourami that I want so badly but I just don’t have a tank ready for him yet. I say hi whenever I see him though

Well... it happened again... I went in for guppies and walked out with a honey gourami (the one I’ve been eyeballing for weeks), a tiny little baby albino bristlenose Pleco, and a golden White Cloud Mountain minnow (the only had just the one for some weird reason). I’ll have to go back for guppies another time I suppose
