Back in the old days it was a game during water changes to get the siphon started without getting water in your mouth. Sometimes I lost that game.

I absolutely have once and only once. I remember it like it was yesterday and thanks for bringing back the memory cuz now i got that taste in my mouth ;) ... It was my 10 gallon and was thinking i would be more precise with my WC and instead of using my water changer i used a hose and a bucket. And the rest is history. And not to mention after i got the siphon started i was focused on the cleaning the 10 that i didnt notice the hose was on the floor.. But thats for another thread :)

I did recently, trying to get a canister working. It was one of my dirtiest tanks :yuck:
and to top it off I didn't get it working:p

I'm lucky and glad I never had to. There's a great method of getting it started and I never had to get a taste of the water. :p

Yup. Straight down the throat. Some gravel too. I fear there may have been less pleasant stuff in that water too. Totally didn't spend a good 5 minutes spasming and retching.

Since then its only happened again about a hundred times. I'm pleased to report I no longer have to suck on a hose to water change my tanks.

Why on earth were you using your mouth to fix your canister? ;)

It wouldn't prime, so I sucked it not realizing it was primed just defective then got a mouthful of water. The only time i've ever done it. I've always said "i'll never been one of those fools" more fool me :(

Yep, I use a long length of hose and the suck method to start the siphon. I usually make sure the hose is empty but I sometimes forget to drain it so it becomes the suck and spit method. :p

What do you mean accidentally?
You want me to waste all that perfectly good water? That's not very environmentally friendly.

I bet some our tank waters are safer than some tap waters
