Hello~

I am interested in getting a couple hatches for my twenty gallon with a marineland HOB filter, its got a high output and a preety strong water disturbance(except for a couple areas) mainly in the middle of the tank...
Do they like the water disturbance, and what is the least amount I can get to make them happy?

THANKS!!!!

Ive never had personal experiences with hachet fish but from what ive seen in videos and in pet stores, they don't like very strong currents. (someone correct me if I'm wrong) What I do know is that they are schooling fish so they should be kept in schools of at least 5.

They like current but not a lot of current. They also need extra space because they mostly only look up and the extra space on the side makes them feel less confined. They literally swim and .25" - 2" from the surface. They also get fairly large...I don't keep marble hatchets but I've read they stay smaller than silvers. Hatchets startle easy so they need to be kept away from room traffic and movement. And since they reside so close to the lighting, they startle if the lights are turned off too sudden in a dark room. A 20 gallon might be a bit small unless we are talking about marbles...still, idk. And they definitely need to be kept in a shoal. A tight cover is an absolute must.

I agree. 20G is too small. They are schooling fish. And need a tight lid to control the jumping.

They need medium current and in a group of a least 6, as long as you don't have big gaps in the filter then you should be fine. Follow the advice and you will be fine

Please watch the dates when replying on threads. I'm sure the OP has dealt with this in the past 6 months.
