Hamsters Eye Is Closed

I have a Russian dwarf hamster that’s been keeping one eye closed every time he’s in his cage. But when I pick him up he opens it. I tried cleaning his eye with a cotton swab with warm water but he still keeps it closed every time he’s not being held.

 

How long has he been like this, and can you post some pictures, from different views and maybe a close-up?

 

I’ll try taking a picture later he’s sleeping right now and he’s been like this for like a month.

 

Soak a cotton ball in warm water and hold it on his eye for a little bit. Older hamsters get this issue a lot, especially dwarfs. It’s referred to as “sticky eyes.” It could also be caused by a cold, an infection, or even allergies.

 

here’s a photo but it’s not that good. The photo shows his right eye that’s closed. And I tried cleaning it with a cotton ball with warm water.

I would take him to the vet.

 

Taking him to a vet is a good idea. I use neosporin ointment when mine have eye issues. If that doesn’t help in a few days then off to the vet we go. It could literally be anything. Entropion, scratch, debris, infection, congenital. Anything. If you can get a better picture? Also be very careful rubbing his eye. It can make the irritation much worse. Keep us posted please?

I don’t know how old he is but I’ve had him for over a year. His cage is 23.6 x 14.4 x 11.8 and it’s a two story cage. I’ve never tried taming him and if you mean by bothering it as if I accidentally bothered his eye then no, I never touch his face.

I won’t be able to take him to the vet on the weekend or on Monday and Tuesday because they’re closed on the weekend and I’m working on Monday and Tuesday. I’ll take him on Wednesday or Thursday

As said, I’d take him to the vet ASAP.

Also, you have a few issues with cage sizes.

 

Is his cage too small or something?

 

Yeah, I’m assuming it’s the two story critter trail, I bought one for my hamster a little while back to put her in when I was cleaning her cage. She hated it, and so did I. They recently updated the minimum, I think it’s 460 inches of floor space? I highly recommend diy bin cages or the IKEA Detolf, I have it and my ham loves it

It’s better, but not big enough. I’d upgrade ASAP, and please take them to the vet!
