Yikes. Perhaps ordering fish online would be a better option if there no LFSs.

Luckily my wal-mart does not carry fish, but I have been to a few that do and have been appalled by the conditions. Fish literally eating each other. Guppies and tiger barbs in the same tank. It made me so sad.

My friend jus bought a guppy from pet smart, I checked the water levels with my new apI master test, the ammonia was 8.0 ppm I'm not completely sure what that means but the fish has bright red gills and we think it has ammonia poisoning

That is an extremely high amount of ammonia, and yes I'm sure the fish is suffering

It sounds like your friend may not of cycled her tank before getting the guppy and now the fish is going to suffer. Do a large water change, several if your friend has to, to get the ammonia down. Try putting in some prime, and stability to hopefully help.

I think they're saying that Petsmart's water had 8 ppm, not the tank they are in now. Maybe I'm mistaken though.

That could be I was reading it as their friend's tank was that high in ammonia. It's so easy to misunderstand things.

So did you guys call petsmart and complain?

Yea, all they were concerned about was did we want to return the fish for another fish or a refund. Kara flipped, she said she wouldn't take that fish back to die that way.
The guppy seems to be doing okay, the gills are still red but my friend is doing daily water changes and the fish seems better than it was.

At least the guppy is alive and in better hands.

I feel like there should be some sort of regulatory agency to monitor stores that sell fish. Clearly Walmart wouldn't pass the test.

There should be, but most likely won't unless we can get corporations to see them as animals, and not moving decorations.

I boycott walmart 100%. Corporate does not care. Remember they are there to rob the poor and feed the rich.

If you like how Wal Mart runs a fish department, you'll love how the federal government does it.

I'm sure there's some people who try to run their fish department the proper way..
