HaHa! I tested Wal-Mart's aquarium water!

Oh my, I went to Wal-Mart on Wednesday and I bought a mystery snail for the heck of it. When I got home, I immediately tested Wal-Mart's water to see how bad it was:
Ph- 7.2
Ammonia- .5
Nitrites- .25
Nitrates- 120 ppm ( holy cow !!! )
Poor fish! I just want to buy all of them and rescue them if I had my own pet store. Is your local Wal-Mart as bad as mine? (I live in northern michigan)

My local Walmart is bad too. As bad as you feel for the fish, don't buy them. If you do, you're supporting their business and they'll only get more fish in to replace the one you bought.

True, I thought of that. I could use them dora animal abuse xD

For, not dora

sue them, not use them

Fish don't count as abusable animals. At most the law considers them decorations or something similar xD

I wonder what the water was before fish were in it with no aeration or filtration? I would guess nitrates would be high, but the others are questionable.

Yeah, I wonder.

Write a nasty complain to their corporate office. Bad water quality will lead to fish loss, corporate rats do care about loss in profits a lot.

I live in the uk and I was told cichlids were peaceful I made them aware I had glow light tetras in the tank to which they assured me they would be fine!!! Not at all my ammonia levels through the roof because apparently they create huge amounts of ammonia and they also ate my tetras. :-(

They typically use a RO type recirculating setup the issue is all of those tanks are connected... I emailed Corp once they had a crew to tear down and sterilize the display within 3 days of reporting that I got a fish with callumanus worms. They had the whole thing drained and dry for a month and they tore apart the filtering system and replaced a lot of bits...

They also said they would inform the supplier they get the fish from....

The only question is whether you really got a fish with callumanus worms, or just told them you did to clean up their act.

In all sincerity, sorry you had to deal with those.

Would it be illegal for you to do that?

If not, you should let walmart manager know how bad their water is!

Absolutely not illegal at all. He bought a snail and tested the water in the bag they gave him.

It'd be different if he was testing their tanks directly.

I went to the fair last week and now that I have a fish tank I was so frustrated when seeing the gold fish in bowls having ping pong balls thrown at them that I decided I am not going back

At our fair, it's just bowls of water to throw pong balls at and the fish are kept in a huge Rubbermaid container. I still disagree with it

Mine was similar, the cups were empty...but instead of a "huge Rubbermaid container" they were just all shoved into a couple 10 gallon tanks. I would say maybe 40-50 in one 10 gallon. :-( Maybe even more.

My Walmart doesn't have fish. I really hope it stays that way. But something fishy is going on in that store. And I'm not sure what.

My walmart has 5 gallon tanks that have non compatible fish together.

Like goldfish and angelfish

ACF and guppies

Oscars and jack dempseys

Its horrible...

My Wal-Mart is actually where I got ny Oscars from. There are generally dead fish in there being munched on, I never thought to test the water but I definitely didn't put it in my tank. A lady that worked that knew my husband said to check for ich and treat for it anyway, that ALL their fish had it!

I went there a few weeks ago to find ALL the fish coated in a large amount of ick.

I also feel so very sad for the male bettas that are in those tiny cups for weeks on time with no heat or filtration.

I also feel bad for the dragonfish that they carry..... they are white in stress and usually die in a few hours of being there because of not being in brackish water.

I guess none of you guys are old enough or don't remember, but Walmart used to sell birds and small mammals as well.

I think I do remember that. I was really young though, it was before all the super centers, back when they just had a food court. My mom hates all animals though so we never bought any.

Our Wal-Mart just shut down their tanks for 2 weeks to treat the fish, by the time they were done, every single fish was dead.

I've never been to a wal-mart in Canada that sells pet-fish.

Did any of you talk to the manager? ... or wal-mart does not care?

They do not care. Trust me I know. I had to be escorted from the store because the conditions were so bad and I kept arguing.

I hate going to the fish department because people pour bettas into each other's cups to see them fight. I went back to get some airline tubing and saw a female rotting away in a cup containing a live male.

You both need to complain to the cooperate officials, not just the managers of a specific store. A lot of times the managers won't do anything and are even part of the problem, but the really higher ups will because it means profit loss. You could also take a video of it, and put it up on social media if the cooperate people do nothing.

Sorry to hear your social media was a black hole. Mine is mostly so family can see their grandkids/neices from us.

You should be able to look up an email, phone number, and/or address of the cooperate office of Walmart.

The fish had died the day I got it when I pulled it out and put it in a cup to return. A worm crawled out and I was able to show the manager a live worm. I treated my tank with prazI pro that same day I seem to have caught it in time as I did not have more show up.

Very lucky it didn't spread! From my limited research, there are stations of those worms that don't respond to prazi

I wish that would help but when I spoke to a manager about the conditions he told me very frankly that they buy a large amount cheaply and to have the equipment and supplies to keep them alive and healthy wouldn't be covered by the profit from the extra fish. He seemed to genuinely care but he cared more about his job.
And if you look on peta.org, they publicize a lot about Wal-Mart and pet smart. Unfortunately most folks just don't care that much.

they are the only place in town to buy fish they have oscars and african cichlids in the same tank each tank is about 11" cube all interconnected to a big central filter.
about 15 gourami in 2 tanks 6-8 parrot cichlids. It is pretty bad.

there are 4 rows 2 cold water 2 warm water the two cold water have 2 fewer dividers so 2 larger sections than the cold area. the tropical has 5 tanks.

then there are 10-15 betta in cups that the water is still blue from being packed in methylene blue treated water.
