Has been attempted. I'd be glad if the forum would at least split this into Malawi/Tanganyika/Victoria to actively try and end the problematic use of the term "african cichlid", but that was declined before, so I doubt there is a chance.

Would be at least fair, since there is a "Ram guru". I'd prefer a more general "dwarf cichlid" batch, maybe split into South American and African. That would probably make more sense.

I think Malawi/Victoria are close enough to lump together...the fish are similar enough in behavior, temperament and water requirements. As well as their are haplochromines in Lake Victoria too.
But you hardly ever see anyone with a "Lake Victoria" tank, at most you might see a few obliquidens or nyererei in a Peacock/Hap tank.

Tanganyika is a whole other subject with a very wide range species, temperaments and compatibilities.

Even so...the majority of "African Cichlid" tanks I see are of the Big Box store assorted Mbuna variety...they are usually the ones that need questions answered. So is there enough of a use case to break up the category?
How many people out there who have shell dwellers or Frontosa don't have a good handle on what they are doing?

In my opinion there is, as the forum is international and the naming problem is, as far as I can tell by now, very much restricted to the US and a handful of other countries.
