Guppy Pair Question

I have a few pairs of guppies that have been breeding like crazy consistently. But recently I tried to change it up.
I put a Russian red lace female with a male long fin blue fancy guppy. Both the male and female have long tail fins. The long tail seems like it could a dominant gene with these two. will they actually breed true given that they're two different types of guppies? Or am I wasting my time with them?

Anything is possible but it can take many generations to achieve all the desired traits with consistency if the chosen breeders are not similar. The dominant genes will win out. To achieve the recessive genes you'll have to selective breed fry with those traits repeatedly. Some strains take a decade to get where they are now. It takes years, not months.

They are the same species, guppy, so they will breed.

However, if the female is not a virgin, it'll be a long time before you start seeing offspring from them.

ah okay. She did have fry before, so could I expect it to be awhile before she drops? How long will you be?

I believe that they mean that while she will still be dropping at the same rate, since they have several batches from the same male you will not see fry with the traits of the blue fancy guppy.

There is about a 24HR period after a female drops fry that the new male can breed and over ride the sperm packets she has stored. Otherwise she will continue to drop fry from the previous breeding. Theoretically guppy can store enough sperm for her entire breeding life, but in my experience after 3 or four batches it's usually over and she needs to breed again. It's the same for most livebearers. My male sword jumped out of the tank in July. Females dropped many fry for months and just now appear "unpregnant".

ah okay. She hasn't been with another male in about two months. She was just with another female. will she still not have traits of the new male for awhile?

Impossible to say for sure. You'll know in a few months. High probability you'll get "mutts" when you cross strains but you can work still work them towards your goal in a couple years with selective breeding.
