Guppy looks like she's bleeding

I wondered if she was going into labour, but her sides look like there is blood oozing. She's very still, breathing a little fast but not laboured or anything.

Any ideas? She's in a Livebearer box because I don't have a spare qt at the moment. If she's sick I don't want the others getting sick too.

This is normal.
The blood vessels are pressed closer to the skin by the embryos.

+1. I concur. It's nothing to be worried about

Thank you so much. I saw you'd replied and was hoping you weren't going to say dropsy. Is she possibly close to birth then? Her gravid spot is huge and kinda squared off. It's very odd looking.

Yes, she is very close.

Yeah I think she'll be dropping her fry very soon. If you watch her gravid spot closely sometimes you'll see little eyes .

Aww thanks so much, guys! Ive gone from fearing it was the beginning of the end, to being thrilled it's just her being all fat and preggers
Is she close enough to be keeping her in the box then? I don't want her stressed and all for days or anything.

And yes, I've looked for eyes, rogue! Haha. Can't see any, though there are some pin black dots ...which are probably eyes then, hehe. I forget how small guppy babies are! Haha, all the tank mates are taking it in shifts to come up and sniff at the box. Even the cories are having a gawk

I would guess she will start dropping with in 48 hours.
Too many variables to give an exact time.

I went out for a few hours, then about 8pm we had a blackout. I checked her with a torch a couple of hours later but she had died. She had given birth to about 6 fry that had also died. it's not logical. Did she die, coincidentally (after giving birth to them), and they then die when the water wasn't circulating anymore? Or did theirs and her death occur from a bad pregnancy and labour? I'm musing out loud. I know there is no knowing why.

Thanks for the help guys. Guess I need to go female guppy shopping tomorrow. The females are almost outnumbered by the persistent 2 males.

I'm so sorry! So the fry and the mother all died? That's horrible. I would say that the stress of labor, the stress of other fish trying to get to her (to eat the fry), the drop in temperature, and filters stopping (oxygenation going down) all contributed to her death. I have you have better luck with your next batch!

thank you.
I was surprised as well. I wondered if they had died before birth, and she subsequently died giving birth to them before the rest could be born. But I don't know much about guppy pregnancy. I wasn't sure if they did then birth dead fry.

thanks rogue. With so many things having gone wrong, I wasn't sure which would have been the most probable cause. We've had power cuts before, but I can't remember the last prolonged blackout. It's usually back on in seconds. Darn above ground power!
