HI Val ;D
is that a platy? she is so sweet.. love the dark tail fin. If she is a platy, in my opinion she looks pregnant. Is her tummy real dark when she goes through the light? Congrats on the new fish!!! Did you get others as well or is this your fish to determine if the well water is ok for stocking the 55 gallon tank?
take care... PM to follow soon...

She is one that I got for the well water tank. She is pretty round, that spot is much darker on her than on the others. I just had them scoop some up, and she was pretty much grey when I put her in the tank, but by the next day, the tail had darkened up, and there is some iradescent blue/gold in the center of it that doesn't show here. They are amusing fish, very, very different from bettas, and Neptune is NOT amused that their tank is next to him!!
So far the well water has been good, and I have also heard from guys on a forum in Winnipeg who live in rural areas and are on wells, and all use their well water with good results.
It would be pretty funny if my well water experiment also made me learn how to deal with fry, but I saw a couple fry in the tank at Walmart, and they are so cute!!
Waiting for the mail! Val

She is pregnant, I would say. wal-marts I've seen do not separate male and female, so if she was in the tank more than 5 minutes with a sexually mature male she was impregnated, which is pretty much a given.
The darkening up of the coloration is very common after stress has passed and/or when presented to better water conditions.
From our PMs I think you are taking great care of your fish and I hope you learn everything you possibly can from them.
