Guppies Can Eat Veggies?

I've seen that guppies can eat lettuce, peas and cucumber, is that true? I just want to give them some variety but not wasting to much money.
If they can eat veggies, how much should I feed them?

I'm planning to keep guppies as well. Would love to know if they eat veggies for variety!

Any guppy questions just ask me if you want! I'm more than happy to help PaulaH Daniel Rodrigues

Guppies should be fed some defrosted, de-shelled pea once a week. Mash it up and put little pieces into the water. Guppies go crazy for it, and it's packed with good vitamins and will help prevent bloating.

Cucumber and lettuce some guppies don't like, but others do. Mine preferably don't like these but yours might. Feed veg once every other day ideally.

You can feed fruit as a rare treat; once a month maybe.

Live or frozen protein are also loved by guppies. Brine shrimp, blood worms, damphnia... They will eat it all!!! Feed once every other day ideally.

Flakes or pellets (preferably a well balanced flake meal) are the staple diet though. Enough flake that they will eat in a minute is a good portion for them, and should be fed twice a day (whenever you aren't feeding them veg, protein or fruit though)

Guppies will also eat small bits of plant and algae matter around the tank as a snack if they need to.

Any other questions feel free to ask!! It's so much fun being a miniature chef for my guppies...

Thanks Mary765 Its really nice to find support especially when you're starting out in a hobby as a newbie
I gotta ask, if Guppies like higher PH.. since my tank's PH seems to hover around 6.8-7.2.

Guppies are my speciality, I'm always happy to help!

That is a good ph for guppies! They like anything between 6.8-7.8

My tank is in the early 8 ph and still my guppies thrive because I acclimatised them very carefully! If they are from a decent breeder then they are very hardly little fish.

I can hardly wait for my tank to finish cycling so I can keep my guppies
What method do you use to acclimate the guppies? I'd be really grateful if you could run me through the method briefly, like drip acclimation or something else?
I'll surely keep you posted when I get the guppies

Ok, so float the bag of guppies in the water for about 10 or 15 minutes initially.

Then you take out a small bit of water from the bag and tip it down the sink, just a little bit initially (about 1/10 of the bags total water). Then replace it with some tank water.

Repeat this every 5 or 10 minutes until the water in the bag is mostly your own tank water (which should take about an hour). Tip this water into your tank with the fish in it and watch them closely for signs of stress.

All done!!!

In the wild, guppies eat decaying plant matter (a lot) and some algae. So as long as the veggies are softened, they love them. You have to be careful not to overfeed, as they are small fish.
If you cut a zuccinI into a coins and freeze it, the effect of freezing will make the food accessible to a guppy. They will love the fiber. The same is true for romaine lettuce and spinach - I would look for pesticide free.
But watch that important water quality.
I would not do what Mary does with pet store guppies. I never allow "store water" into my tanks - water conditions in stores are dangerous and the water often carries pathogens the fish are fighting off.
I tip the water into a bucket with a net over it, then put the fish in via the net. Freeswimming Ich, dangerous bacteria, ammonia, unwelcome store antibiotics - I keep them out of my tanks.
Guppies should thrive at high pH - they come from hard freshwater over limestone and dead coral. Their natural pH is in the high 7s. But they adapt well, although are more prone to skin parasites if the water lacks minerals.

I guess Mary meant the same, tipping the water out in a sink and adding tank water slowly into the bag
How do I increase the PH if I need to?

That's what I meant yeah.

Though the aquarium tanks here in England are much cleaner and safer, so there is little risk of passing on a disease here. I usually just tip the tank water into my tanks, but I thought I would give the safest instructions.
