Guppies - An unwanted excursion into livebearers

Well, I have some guppies now, my daughter (almost 7) decided that was the kind of fish she wanted to get for the 29g. I've never been a fan, and I'm not sure that I am yet, but a few of them are growing on me a bit. I got 3 from the store and 4 from my friends (two of the females have already given birth since I got them) and my friends also threw in a handful (i.e. 8 or so) fry with the 4 adults I got from them.

Anyhow, here's a video.

Your going to need more places for the babys to hide... I suggest a moss of some sort most people like java moss or guppy grass (egira naja) be prepared to have a lot more baby fry about every week with that many females.

I'm getting a ton of plants from a friend tomorrow. I have a feeling after I'm finished the adults won't be able to find each other. I'm not really sure that I want the babies to be able to hide that well, lol.

Yeah the boys thinks so too! lol The ladies are outnumbered 4 to 3, at least the adult guppies. We'll see what the babies are as they grow. Originally I had 1 male and 2 females then my friend gave me 3 males and 1 female.

Well here's an update. Guppies don't particularly need any help breeding that's for sure. Note how I've gone from a few guppies to being overrun.

Awww cute babies and pretty guppies. STBH just bought my boys girlfriends so now I have three boys and four girls so soon I will have babies again but this time I have a 30 gallon instead of a 10 gallon( which had 1 adult and 50 fry)And out of the 50 fry I kept the only 8 males and sold mama and the girls to my friend and Divanina won 5 of the males. So I will be doing a give away again in few months of the fry that survive.

I've got these guys in a 55 gallon and they have no predators. lol. The only other thing in the tank is a pair of bristlenose plecos and a school of cory cats. I even thought about getting some ghost shrimp to predate the fry because it's getting a little ridiculous in there.

Perhaps I'll take a few off your hands

If you are in Northeast Indiana you will definitely have to. lol

I am getting a triple red cockatoo cichlid so that should help keep the numbers down.

Update: seriously? 30 babies? These things double every week. I've had to start transferring a few young ones into the convict tank. They're getting out of control.

I had 50 in a 10 gallon so I feel for you if you like I could buy some off of you but than again they are a good live food for convicts

As with the other thread let's keep any b/s/t discussion limited to pm or the b/s/t forum.

Joe, what does your daughter think of all her guppy babies?
Must be something in your water. lol

Lucy its getting silly. They are in a 55 gallon and breeding non stop. I had to sneak down there after she went to bed and feed some of them to the convicts. I guess I know what kind of fish to use for mass production as feeders.

this is why people say male or female only problem is the females are born pregnant... so the best choice is males only they are more colorful and won't explode the tanks...

Well I had a male only tank and yes they are colorful but they fight like crazy once they become sexually mature so I got females and of my females only one is dull colored the rest are very colorful for females

You know what they say. Home grown is better than store bought feeders. lol
I've never had luck keeping guppies let alone getting them to breed.

I think the key for having fry that survive is to have only guppies and lots of hiding places. I never find fry. My rams and angels have learned how to find them in the hornwort.

Get your daughter a ram, if you don't want to keep feeding them to the convicts when she isn't looking. Or even better, a ram pair, so you'll be overrun with baby rams in a few weeks.

I'm hoping to get another pair of the fish in my avatar (pelvicachromis taeniatus)for my planted 55g. If I do
they should help keep populations steady.

That's my problem now is its guppies, Cory cats and Bristlenose plecos in the tank. Figured the adults would get some fry but they're pretty good about leaving them alone.
