Gunk growing in spray bar

About a week or so ago, my husband was doing a 25% water change, and we noticed that we had build-up of some sort in all of our tubing, and its in our spray bars as well. It does clog it up a bit, but have been clearing the holes when it happens. When the gunk comes out of the holes, it looks whitish. Is this normal, or do we need to be treating this as a problem? Thanks in advance!

We clean the filter every few weeks, unless we see a big problem. We've had the tank(60 gal) about 2 months now. We have 14 fish(plus several fry).

 

I clean the spraybar bi-weekly by soaking and rinsing. Are you over feeding the fish?

 

I don't think we are, but may be. They get fed a bit of flake in the morning and at night. About mid day they get a few bloodworms. We also put in an algae pellet for the algae eaters.

What kind of fish? I only feed 1 time a day.
(Oh, meant bi-monthly) I try to clean the filter once a month in used tank water.

 

We have 2 Black Mollies, 2 Mickey Mouse Platy, 5 Guppies, 3 Tetras, 2 Algae Eaters, and 7 fry(donating once they get big enough)

 

I'd cut down to one feeding a day. Try alternating one day flake, the other bloodworms. Flake food is very messy IMO. I prefer frozen myself. Sounds like a filter cleaning is needed. Remember, use old tank water especially if your water is chlorinated. Swish the media around in bucket until it's clean of gunk.

I have hard well water w/ lime scale and iron. My filters run fine. I scrub the glass and wash the spraybar to avoid buildup.
