Kinda of a dumb question (and I'm a total beginner here) however have you checked the baseline for the water you use to fill you tank?

I had an ammonia spike one time right after a PWC and it turns out my tap water was reading .50 ppm Amm...

What are you testing with? If you had .5 NH3 id exspect you fish to be sick. just a heads up, the redtail will get much bigger then the 20 will alow.

Are you checking it before or after your water change? And yes, I also wonder about your tap reading. Mine has 1ppm right now because we're in a drought so they're treating it with extra chloramine because of increased stagnation.

He is testing with the API Master Test kit, soltarianknight.

Billy247 - You will need to give us more details than what you have provided.
When was the last time you have done a water change? How often do you do them? Have you done anything special with the tank lately?

My best recommendation is to start doing daily partial water changes everyday until you see the ammonia level start to go down. If you can, go out and buy a bottle of Prime and use that as your water conditioner instead of the one you are using. Why I say is because Prime detoxifies both ammonia and nitrite for 24 hours <Giving you enough time in between water changes and keeping the water liveable for the fish>.
