Wondering...would it work to grow algae in a glass jar and add some liquid fertilizer to the water and shake it really good then place it under a plant light? Would that grow algae? I have shrimp, snails and bn pleco that I want to grow algae for

I do it. I have a jar sitting at a window and I just let it go. An old cat fountain water pump is running to help with surface agitation is all I use. I harvest the algae and feed it to my shrimp when I feel its long enough.

I believe all you need is a airstone and a window sill.

Put a glass jar of water in the windowsill and it will grow plenty of algae. I don't use any extra lighting or airstone.

Just a jar? No stones or anything?

Spoke to soon. My wife has glass jars with self-watering plant setups. They are mason jars and then a plant is sort of on top. Lots of algae grows, but it might be due to the interaction between the water and the plant/soil growing. So maybe just water isn't enough to grow algae.

Was just curious because I have seen people put a stone in the jar and rotate them so they are easy to take out and put in a tank.

Do you just draw the water out and put it in your shrimp tank? Is the algae floating/growing in the water or do you scrape it off the glass?

I scrape what grows off the glass, I also have small stones in the jar so if I see one covered in it, I just get the stone out and place it in with the shrimp. I leave the water alone for the most part.

No liquid fertilizer needed. Just take a jar of tank water and give it light. If you want faster growth, use an air stone. That’s about it. I use this method to grow hair algae for my snails.

What snails eat hair algae?

I farm bladder snails for my pea puffers. They love it! My mystery snails also get it as an occasional food and they eat it too. They won’t clear up an infestation, but they’ll definitely graze on it.

I’ve also heard that nerites will eat it, but I don’t own any so I don’t know.
