Green Swordtail Maximum Size

Hey Everyone,

Just wondering how long it will take Green Swordtail to reach maximum size if I am getting them at 2"? Also what is the maximum size?
They will be housed in a tank that will be 360 gallons, 8'x3'x2'.
I've read they reach 6 inches and will take roughly 2 years to get there, though i'm not so sure still.

Thanks in Advance!

I heard they can get around 4-5 inches but maybe emeraldking could tell how long it would take for them to grow to that size.

Well, do you mean a wild green swordtail species or a green breeding form of a swordtail? For there are different sizes a green swordtail can reach. Not all green swordtail (wild or breeding form) will become large. But in general, if you want to know the potential, and if we won't consider early males (for early males remain small), they can reach up between 2 inches - 6 inches. But I've seen bigger ones. But those grew up in a large pond in the backyard. But the bigger they get, the less attractive they become in color.

The duration to grow up large differ per individual specimen. That can be between 4 months and two years. So, there's no real answer to your question.

Thank you very much! I dont know if my LFS is selling wild or captive bred and their sales staff dont seem very knowledgable but I guess I can just try them out and see how much they grow in 2 years.

The story you hear so often that they won't grow up large if kept in a small tank, is also incorrect. They can even grow up large in a small tank.

I always thought they needed the space to grow large.
My plan was to do an 8' aquarium and start with the Swordtails with Denison barbs, then when they get larger, I wanted to add Firemouth and Spotcheek cichlids.
But its going to be in the future because of my current situation.
Thank you for your kindness.

The larger the space, the larger they do get but in a faster way. But kept in a smaller tank, they can still grow large but in a slower pace.
