Green Lantern Platys

HI everybody, I recently purchased 3 green lantern platys. Can anybody tell if they are male/ female or give me some tips on sexing them? ( sorry for the blurry pics, my camera sucks ) . But anyways, yesterday I noticed the slimmer platy was chasing another one around. No fin nipping or biting, just following/ hovering? I have 2 chubby ones and 1 slimmer....maybe 2 females and 1 male? If so, do they appear pregnant or is the round belly normal for female platys? I appreciate any and all tips!! New to the world of the Platys and am open to any new info!

I just got some of these beauties as well! Gorgeous fish!

Looks to me in the second pic like you have 2 females (top and bottom) and one male (middle). The pics are a bit blurry, so it's hard to tell but that's my sense from looking at them. the top one in that same pic looks to be pregnant.

It's usually pretty easy to sex livebearers, go by this pic and look closely at the fins underneath yours:

Tough to say but two of them do seem to have a bulge. Could be two females. What you using for a camera? iPhone/Android?

Yes they are just gorgeous aren't they! I love their color and thank you so much! I believe you are right I believe I do have 2 females and 1 male.....did not think I'd get the surprise of a pregnant one though! But she does appear to have a pretty round belly doesn't she

Livebearers can store sperm almost indefinitely and because of this they tend to always be pregnant. There is a delay in between pregnancies.

I have an older galaxy so sadly not very good camera quality.....but yes and to be more specific, the one top one from this picture was being chased by the platy in the middle and since it is much slimmer I believe the chaser is a male....I wonder if the one from the top is pregnant though.

Guess I should prep up the tank for some babies!

I tried to PM you to avoid opening this can of worms on the thread, but it won't let me. So here it goes, I'll ask everyone to stay on topic and not play the tank police, but: Did you end up putting them in with your goldies? (Not bashing you, my unpopular opinion is that is doable, but that's irrelevant). If you did I'll just warn you that the babies will most likely get eaten.

I have guppies, Molly's, goldfish, and platys in different tanks I've just always been curious about adding some more color with adult platys lol they're just beautiful! although would be bad for breeding like you said...but thanks for the tip! I've also read that the mothers eat the babies too so will be better to completely isolate them in my other tank

I would like to add my dalmation platys with the goldfish though since they are a beautiful orange/yellow color and just look good together....what has been your experience with putting them together?

I've never kept platies. But I had some swordtails in with mine before I moved those over to my guppy colony and they're very similar species closely related. Kept the tank at 74 and everyone was fine. This of course assumes the tank can handle the bioload and has plenty of swimming room. Everyone was healthy, but the goldies chowed every single baby sword.

One of the key things will be making sure to minimize competition for food. I fed the goldies sinking pellets, and once they were at the bottom eating, I'd add some flakes for the swords. This had them feeding in different levels of the tank and not competing with each other.

I'll keep this in mind and maybe test it out myself w male platys to avoid fry becoming snacks for my goldies!

Hey if you're ok with letting it happen, the babies make very nutritious snacks lol.
