xI am setting up a 55 gallon freshwater tank.I am picking fish with some very pretty colors and wonder what color of gravel would help display these colors best. Would appreciate any adivice or tips.

Generally a darker colored gravel helps bring out the colors the best.

I only ever use black or natural-colored gravel. I think the colored kinds look kinda tacky... (no offense to anyone)
Black will really make the colors of your fish pop

I began using light coloured natural river sand (mostly collected by myself) but recently I upgraded to Eco Complete, a black substrate, to help my plants. I am very pleased with the contrast and good looks of black substrate, so I adhere to jdhef and pinkfloydpuffer comments.

Like everyone else, I think black would really make your fish stand out. If not that, then some natural-ish colored gravel would look good (Like in my tank I chose a mixture of darker browns. I'm very pleased with how it looks).

If you have a black framed tank, get black. If you have a tan framed tank, get tan or light brown.
