Gravel or sand substrate?

I like unipac kivu and Limpopo sand/micro gravel (it comes in other colours) which is not as fine as sand but much finer than gravel. Plants do all right in it. My plants have done really well in tropica aquarium soil. They did very badly in gravel.

what do u say about play sand like argos ?

 

I use pool sand from the pool supply store. I don't even rinse it, it's very clean to start with and grows plants very well. Here's some pictures of some of my plant tanks with sand and no CO2.

I've not tried it but I'm sure plants will like it more than gravel.

It really comes down to what you prefer. As long as you wash it very good either should give you good results.

I went with sand, worst decision ever I can't keep it clean. Just go with a dark coloured gravel.

I have used all kinds of different sand and gravels over the years. I tried potting soil what a mess. I have even used dirt out of my yard. That actually worked well. Lol

 

I vacuum my sand every water change and the sand looks fine. I also have JuliI Cory Cats that love to sift thru the sand and it looks great every morning.
