I have lots of gravel in my drive way/yard and it probably has a little bit of car oil in it lol and anyway I was wondering if I clean it up can I use it for my fish tank? if so how do I get it really clean?

and also does anyone know any substitutes for gravel (besides sand and those little jewel things) ????

HI there,
You can try rinsing it, but personally I don't think it's safe for fish because you said there is car oil on it.

No I don't think you could ever get ot clean enough for your fishtank. Uou can also use dirt or potting mix but that will still need a gravel or sand cap

You could go bare bottom.

What is it that you're trying to accomplish with your tank?

The only way to get oil impregnated gravel clean is with chemicals that maybe harmful to your fish.

vkusno a local home improvement store should have pea gravel available, it's smooth and a natural stone material. I do like sand for a substrate, but I don't get it from the LFS. Once again the local home improvement store, I'm not sure what you have available where you are at.

Since you say there might be car oil on the gravel I wouldn't use it in your tank.
