Gouramis In A 10 Gallon?

What would be the best gouramis for a 10 gallon? I am just looking for a base point to plan this 10 gallon around and I know I would like to dabble in gouramis.

Should it be a singular fish or male/female pair? Tank mates? Special decor? Desirable water parameters?

Only gourami really suitable that I can think of would be Threestripe gourami & I would do a species only tank with live plants.

Only sparkling gouramis are suitable for a 10 gallon. They go well in a pair, or you can keep them in groups. I keep mine in a trio and they are beautiful and very fun to watch. They get to about an inch to an inch and a half, so small schooling fish make good tankmates. Since your tank is a ten gallon, emeber tetras, green neon tetras, or dwarf Rasboras would work. Or you can have a species only tank. I have 6 green neons with my sparkling gourami trio. They love heavily planted tanks with floating plants, like all gouramis. My Gouramis didn't accept pellet and flake food well at first, only live and frozen food. Now they will eat anything I offer them. For parameters, they need really clean water, as they can be sensitive to water quality. They enjoy acidic water, but can handle a ph up to 7.5, although lots of fish can adjust to a different ph. They like temps of 72 to 82. Also, they prefer slow moving water and they can jump, so they should have a lid.

This thread here had I think 5 or 6 gourami varieties that you can keep in a 10 gallon. I just searched the document and found a few that way.

True! Those other ones are pretty rare though I think, sparkling gouramis are the only ones I've found in multiple fish stores.

Sparkling gouramis could be kept as a group in a ten. I would recommend six of them in a ten gallon.
A trio of honey gouramis could also be kept in a ten.
Or a single dwarf gourami.
Or a single paradise gourami.
Obviously none of these species should be mixed in the same tank.

Actually in my opinion, honey Gouramis and dwarf Gouramis both need a 20 gallon tank as a minimum.

Oh and tank size for paradise fish is controversial, some say 5 gallons and some think 30 plus gallons. And I think the OP wanted a gourami that would go well as centerpiece fish, not one for a species only tank.

I would not put a Paradise gourami in a 10 gal. They can grow to 4" long. 30 gal. minimum I would suggest.

And that is your opinion, which you are entitled to, as I am my own.

I've kept dwarves in tens, they're basically like Betta, one fish one tank. Works out real nice.
Same with paradise gourami. A single one is the same as a Betta in a ten. Not super active but flares up for food and very interactive with their food god.

Hahaha, that's a good size if you wanted them with a community of other fish. But on their own as a single fish that's absolute overkill. I keep seven in a (species only) 29 and that's a good size for that group.

So I was thinking about doing a species only tank of course. I was really hoping to do two dwarf gourmis, a male and female pair. Would that work?

You can easily do 3 honey gouramis or a small group of sparkling.

Dwarf gourami are an entirely different species. I think most would recommend against that.

Plus, several members on here had their dwarf gourami die of iriodovirus/DG disease. It sounds like sparkling gourami are a really good bet since they will fit in the tank and they are easier to find.

Sorry, but as I have expressed, dwarf Gouramis really should have a 20 gallon tank or larger. And with a pair of dwarfs, the male will likely chase the female aggressively and the female will be very stressed. They are recommended to be kept in trios in larger tanks(20 gal+)to speed out aggression. The chasing would be even worse in 10 gallon because she would not have room to get away from him.

Yes, I get that. Just needed some clarification. This isn't an immediate thing, just wanted some prior knowledge since I've never dealt with them before. Sorry for the slow replies as well, the lab has kept me tied up today!

Okay so I was doing some planning and I could set my 29 gallon up to be a gourami tank.

Therefore, rehoming the guppies and moving my betta to a 10 gallon with the Bloody Mary shrimp. However, I would have to leave the corys in the 29 gallon along with my clown pleco.

Could they comfortably live together (Gourami, clown plecos and 6 corys). Does that also affect the amount I could keep of the gouramis?

Clown pleco, 6 Cories and 3 Gouramis in a 29. You're good to go. Good luck.

Would that be one male and two females then? They will have enough room to establish territories? Do they bother shrimp?

Yes to the first question. Yes if the tank is well planted. If you get RCS it's 50/50. If you get Amano shrimp you're safe. I would like to suggest Honey's for your gouramis. Hope that helps.

Agreed... I've personally ran into problems having a small harem (1 male to multiple females) in my 65g back in the day, DG are rather aggressive to each other and do better singularly IMO. Other species like honey are a lot more placid and you would have better luck.

I am thinking maybe only one as a centrepiece fish, ( I really wanted to try a male/female pair could that be possible?). I already have Bloody Mary shrimp in there so it would be nice to possibly leave them be but I can remove them if needed. Sparkling gouramis have also peaked my interest but I have never seen them around my area . Honey gouramis just don't float my boat, I just honestly hate the colour yellow and I was really loving the vibrancy and pattern of dgs.
