Gouramis for beginners

I have just bought a 30 gallon tank and would like to try my hand at dwarf gourami ownership.

I've read that they are peaceful and hardy fish. In my other tanks I have mollies, guppies, cories, a platy, neons and minnows.

I will be moving a few of my existing fish into this new tank but not all of them. The platy definitely because she's too big for the tank she's in now.

Does anyone have recommendations for which kind of gourami and which tank mates would work?

I have some baby guppies and I would like to separate the males from the females and put one or the other into the new tank, too. (Five males and seven females.)

I will preach about the honey Gourami until I die. They are small, peaceful community fish. They're best I groups, I'd recommend at least 3, with majority girls. They're sooo nice and peaceful. Aggression is pretty much impossible as long as you have more females. They can be kept with any other small peaceful community fish. Basically as long as the fish won't bully or eat them. They're so sweet and perfect and kind and fun and I love em! They're objectively the best gourami for a community tank. Hand's down.

Dwarfs definiely aren't hardy nowadays.
On the contrary a disaster healthwise.
I'd go for (real) honey gouramis

Oh ok, thank you. They look like beautiful fish! Is it necessary to have any males? Usually in my community tanks (with the exception of the unexpected baby guppies) I prefer only females.

Not necessary, at least, I don’t see why.

I think they are quite peaceful to other fish.
Also keeping them a bit cooler calms them down.

Thank you. I live in Western Australia where the summers are very, very hot. I don't need a heater at all in any of my tanks for about six months of the year and the water temperature is perfect. It's honestly ridiculous how long it's been hot this year.

Actually, I've often wondered how to cool a tank down in the unlikely event of overheating.

I've been in touch with a reputable fish store in Perth to ask if they sell genuine honey gouramis, and they do. They said they also have the "gold honey". What is that?

Ask for the scientific name. Honey Gouramis are called Trichogaster chuna. "Gold honey" usually just means yellow coloured honey Gouramis (as opposed to wild or plain coloured ones), but they could also be mislabeled gold Gouramis,, which are very different.

Yep, I specifically asked for the scientific name. Hopefully the guy answered me truthfully - the store has a good reputation so I think he probably did
