Gouramis Fighting?

I got two blue gouramis(aka 3 spot gouramis) yesterday and today they are chasing each other and biting each other. I think one is a male and the other is a female. The male is the main aggressor but the female retaliates. When they bite, they don't do any visible damage. I read somewhere that this is normal, but I just want to be sure. They are in a 10 gallon tank with 4 neon tetras, 1 gold skirt tetra, 1 cherry barb, 2 red wag platies, and two zebra danios. I put in rocks but no aquatic plants.
If someone can help that would be great.

Gouramis are related to bettas and if you think about it bettas do the same thing so this a sign of territorial aggression or you may have both males and that could be another reason.

Maybe. I'll try moving the rocks and adding plants.

I'm afraid a 10 gallon tank is too small for even 1 blue gourami, let alone 2 of them. I'd stick with 1-2 honey gourami or a few sparkling gourami in a 10 gallon tank.

I agree

That wouldn't help I would put them in a separate tank that is a 20 gallon because that's the minimum size for Blue gouramis.

And the fish you have in their are schooling fish and then need 6+ for the fish to be comfortable.

Those two fish will kill each other in a space as small as a ten gallon, A twenty long maybe, these fish get over four inches long.

I'm gonna keep them for a few days, if they don't stop I'm gonna return the bully to Petsmart.

As mentioned by severalbmembers a 10G is by far to small for this species (even one). You'd better bring them both back and swap them for honeys

ok

There are no honeys at my LFS, would dwarfs work?

Only 1 could be in the tank they are quite aggressive and they are very territorial.

ok will they attack other fish?

A 10 gal is a little tight for a dwarf - it may depend on the individual personality of the fish.

Think you've got a male and female (not 100% sure) gouramis. Putting two fish together will not automatically mean you've an instant couple /pair. They'll need some time AND places to hide like (floating)plants etc.....

If so I wouldn't. Can you place a better sidepic of the first one.

I can't because now he is hiding in the shipwreck and is breathing hevaly. it doesn't look too good.

I would add lots more plants to break up the sight lines at least until aggression dies down. While it is decorated there doesn’t appear to be a place for fish to hide

ok thanks for the advice. I added more spare decorations and called the store I got them from. they said give it a day and if they are still fighting I could bring one back

Your tank is pretty sparse. I think if you added some more plants that would help. And that's good that theyll let you return one if needed. Good luck.
