Gourami Poop.. Parasites?

Hey guys..

So.. my Blue Gourami has white stringy poop. The last few days he's been fine, but today he wasn't really interested in eating flakes.

The white stringy stuff on the hairgrass is what he's pooping out. He's got a 2" string of it coming out of him atm, plus there's this piece on the grass.

Is this a parasite, just how gourami's poop, or do I have something else going on in there?

The tetra's all seem fine and eager to eat. I haven't seen any of them poop at all since having them, but they are acting normal, and there is the normal looking fish poop on the substrate, so they must be 'going'.

Yeah it's a internal parasites. I had dwarf gourami that had those and it didn't end well. But of course that was before I found out what it really want.

If you have a QT you might want to treat it with some meds. Go to the store and buy meds that deal with this kind of stuff. If you don't have it, than you'll have to treat the whole tank.

For some reason the gourami's I had always had them thus I stopped buying the dwarf kinds.

Should I move the gourami to the QT tank or leave him in the big tank? It's just him and some black skirt tetras.

I hope he makes it til Friday, cause insurance was due this week, so I have no extra money. I'll pick up some anti-parasite stuff asap though.

Darn walmart fish. =(

I think you should either give your fish a bath in Metro+ and treat the fish only by adding metro+ to the food or treat the whole tank with something like Tetra Paraguard BUT it is to my understanding that it may break your cycle.

So if you are doing the bath you would dose the appropriate amount directed on the bottle ( I am not sure if 1/2 cap for every 2 gallons). And you prepare the bath about 1/2 hour before you add the fish, it is best if you add an air stone and you would add your fish and leave them in there for 15 minutes or before I'd you see signs of distress. Also make sure the water is the same temperature as the tanks.

Please note that some metronidazole medicine is temperature sensitive. So you'd need to raise the temp to about 86.

The next day you feed them a mix of 1/4 of the cap into the food with about 5ml of tank water, let it soak and feed to fish. You repeat this and feed them once a day for 3 days or a week for severe cases.

I'll see if I can locate some metro on Friday.

I don't suppose anyone has any idea what kind of parasites I'm dealing with here..? I know white and stringy isn't anywhere near helpful, but I'm hoping it's an easy to get rid of variety.

Internal parasites is all I know, I don't know what specific kind.

I know is not planarian because it doesn't really look like it.

=(

Went to dinner last night. Came home to find him dead on the bottom of the tank. I'm actually pretty sad about this one.

I don't know if it was because he was trying to see if I was food, or if it was to say hi, but he'd come up and 'nudge' my hand if I put it in the tank.

Sorry for your loss. You will still have to treat any fish in the tank they most likely will have it also. Tetra parasite guard works well just take out the carbon. And keep an eye on your levels and you should be fine.

I'll pick up some parasite guard on Friday (hate being broke). So far they aren't exhibiting any symptoms and they are all still ravenous at meal time.
