So I just got a powerhead for my tank but my question is do I still need my HOB filter running or not?

A powerhead just creates water movement and surface agitation depending on how you direct the water flow, but it doesn't have filtration, so you would need the HOB running also.

Ok thanks, I had people at the pet store telling me something different but I wasn't sure.

Your welcome. I have seen a youtube DIY internal filter made using a powerhead and tupperware container - along with filter media. It was interesting, but was a filter in the end.

Depends on what you define as powerhead. There are some internal filters that work like a powerhead but also filter then there are just plain powerheads.
If you are on a budget you can make a filter with just the powerhead as JRS said, look tutorials on youtube.

Ok I will look up some videos but for the time being I just plugged my HOB back up along with my powerhead.
You can also use a powerhead to run an undergravel filter or sponge filter in place of an air pump. Aquaclear actually makes a filter that attaches directly to their powerhead and it sells for under 10$ on Amazon. However I don't believe it would really work as a primary filter unless it was a very small tank.
